Hard drive not recognized, making clicking sounds

I plugged in my hard drive and for a while, nothing happened. About 5 minutes later, I got a message saying that the device had malfunctioned.I restarted the PC and unplugged and replugged and bunch of times, ran a chkdsk (after running the chkdsk the clicking seemed to cease for a few minutes, but did return), changed USB cables and tried different ports. The blue light is on, but it just keeps on clicking.

Sorry to say: the last 4 times I got that little click-click-click sound, I ended up getting an Return Authorization from Western Digital and a replacement drive. They were under warranty. A friend of mine used to try some of this "Disk Doctor" software, but it seldom worked. I would contact the manufacturer (if you've had it less than the warranty period). Western Digital warranty period is 3 years - don't know about other manufacturers, but it seems reasonable that your could also be covered that long.

If it's clicking then it's a mechanical failure. Most likely it has bad heads. This site should help you better diagnose the problem.

My External Hard Drive isn't working anymore, to say the just of it. It's on, lights on(not flashing, it flashes when it's being written to or accessed), usually has a regular clicking noise from it...

When a hard drive makes a clicking noise, this indicates the hard drive has failed and if the BIOS and the Computer Management does not detect it, then this confirm a hard disk failure.
To get the computer operating again, replace the hard disk, then install Windows on the hard disk using the Windows installation CD and the Windows product installation code that is on the label on the computer then install the device drivers and your programs.

Lacie Hard Drive not being recognized on computer

If you are running Vista, You might be one of many people who are reporting an update that is causing some buggy behavior. Try this:

Connect the drive but do not Format the drive, right click 'my computer' then 'manage' go to 'storage/disk management' view the drives; your usb drive will not be allocated a drive letter. You can set one manually or leave it for about 2~5 minutes for one to be allocated auto. Each time you connect the drive you may have to do this.

Well all good things must end and it sounds like this one has. If it doesn't connect in either computer then something inside has either been bumped loose or it's broken.

Computer doesnt read the external hard drive anymore

It sounds like the hard drive head crashed when you pulled the power plug. Unfortunately if you can't get drive to be recognized, you won't even be able to run any diagnostics. You will have to take the drive to an authorized repair shop who will have to check the electronics to see if the head will respond. Unless you have data on your drive that you absolutely need, you will probably save a lot of money by replacing rather than repairing the drive.
