Insignia mp3 player reads "Unable to format external memory!!"

I have an insignia mp3 player and just bought the 4GB micro card. When I insert the micro into the insignia, I get the error msg:
"Unable to format external memory!!"
*It does not show up if I attach my insignia via USB to computer then explore insignia
*It does not show up if I attach my insignia via USB to computer then MyComputer-Rt click-Manage-Storage-Disk Management

How do I format it so I can use it?

Thanks

I purchased a 4GB Sandisk Micro SDHC card and inserted it into my Samsung Gravity 2... when I tried to format it it said "Error"... and after that the phone will not even recognize that there IS an SD card...

your samsung Gravity 2 wont read the HC format, there is not much you can do sorry. the SD HC is a newer format for devices in the last year or so. Older devices will not accept the HC format cards. I did the same thing! And im in the business, easy mistake. Keep it around though you'll use it soon, just not in your Samsung. Gurvy

I have been using a 4gb micro sd memory card when i format card its showing windows was unable to format & displaying 30mb size of card

  • Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from Amazon.com or Buy.com
  • 2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
  • 3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
  • 4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
  • 5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
  • 6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

We just bought a 4gb micro sd card with sd adapter and it is not recognized on our computer. Is this a software problem?

When the flash memory device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.

You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive and in FAT32. (FAT32 will allow data to be exchanged between MACs and PCs).
Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Health

It may not supportt 4GB (micro SDHC).

If it does, then "format" the card in the phone or in a computer.
