EJ351 is programmed to work. In the on position the light it controls is on properly. in the automatic off position the light is on at approximately half intensity. When the manual control is in the o

This timer is rated for incandescent light bulb only.
With 40 watt minimum.
With 100' maximum distance between bulb and timer.

EJ351 is not rated for CFL bulbs (or motors etc).
CFL bulbs are considered inductive loads (same as motors), while incandescent bulb is resistive load (same as a heating element).
Both types of loads use electricity differently.
Programmable wall timers are not ordinary on-off switch... unless you use the override switch.
... instead timers control electricity with electronic circuit board.
So when the manufacturer designs the electronics inside the timer, the design must anticipate how the electricity is used by the load.
Older designs like EJ351, and some modern timers, are not rated for CFL.
... however most newer timer designs are rated for both resistive and inductive loads.
Always read the specification sheet for load rating before installing programmable timer.

CFL light bulb has electronic ballast.
Las bombillas CFL tienen balasto electr?nico
46-1022 will not work for CFL, or motors.
46-1022 no funciona para CFL, o motores.

Older fluorescent light fixtures have rapid start ballast.
Antiguo luces flourscent han lastre inicio r?pido
Nuevas luces flourscent han lastre inicio r?pido

Electronic ballast makes less noise, use less energy, cause less electrical interference, and the ballast lasts longer.
Balasto electr?nico hace menos ruido, consumen menos energ?a, menos causar interferencia el?ctrica, y el lastre de tiempo m?s prolongado.
Take cover off fluorescent light and read what is printed on ballast.

I have a G.E. 24 hour timer GE5101N . It says to set time when you want the lights to go on. How will it know when to shut the lights off?

See GE timers on following link to identify timer:
Link has instructions plus large image you can see segments lifted up and pushed down

Timer knows when to turn lights on-off because segments are lifted up or pushed down.
Push/lift a few segments.
Turn lamp ON
Plug lamp into timer.
Mover switch to Timer ON
Plug timer into outlet.
Manually rotate dial clockwise to see lights turn on-off.
This will show if segments should be up or down.
Set segments for ON OFF times.
Rotate dial until current time lines up with pointer.

Add a comment for more free help.
Also take advantage of fixya phone service.
For a price, expert speaks with you over phone while you work on timer or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

Wondering how to use a 24 hour compact pin timer to automaticlly turn on my lamps ?? bought 1 yesterday but no clue of how to work it !

Pins are usually up for on and down for off, so put them to on for the times you want the lamps on and vice versa, obviously you can check firstly to be sure which way is on and which way is off.

Just purchased GE 15086 smart timer, can I use this on my lights that have been converted to CFL bulbs?

The 15086 is a straight timer, so it should work with no problems. CFL bulbs only have problems when run off a photocell switch/timer or a dimmer circuit.

I have programmed this timer many times and never had a problem untril recently. It comes on and goes off at times other than what I programmed it to do. Is it time to replace it?

You probably switched to a CFL (compact flourscent light bulb). This switch only works with incandescent bulbs. Try the Intermatic ST01C switch. The ST01C works with CFL's and LED's. I just ordered one from They had the best price.
