With a typical mower engine, detergent oils are the way to go. Usually non-detergent oils are for special applications such as air compressor pumps, which specifically call for non-detergent oils. Check you engine, if it is an overhead valve (OHV), then you will want to use a multi-viscosity oil (5W-30), but if it is not, then use the straight 30W.
