I had the same problem. Made a terrible smell and none of the buttons worked. This happened after I had hit the stop button during a dough kneading cycle and then tried to run it again from the beginning. I just gave up & put the machine away. Now 2 weeks later, I have pulled out the machine and turned it on and it is working perfectly! (It's an Oster). In the meanwhile, I found a lot of useful information at the following site: http://www.breadmachinedigest.com/tips/bread-machine-maintenance.php

I had the same problem with an Oster. Made a terrible burning smell and none of the buttons worked. This happened after I had hit the stop button during a dough-kneading cycle because I had decided to add something to the loaf. Big mistake. Anyway, I put the machine away discouraged and today, several weeks later ran it through a cycle (with nothing in it) and it runs perfectly! This is after I found the following site with many helpful hints: http://www.breadmachinedigest.com/tips/b...

SOURCE: Bread does not rise

Bread with a sunken top is likely to be a problem with the Panasonic Bread Machine. This is probably the result of too much fluid and some overactive yeast. First try a bit less fluid. If this does not work, a bit less heat, and a bit more salt should inhibit the yeast. Good luck.

While making bread it has a sudden smell of something burning, what can this be?

That often happens because when the flour is mixed in the beginning small amounts are kicked up in a dust and can settle then on the heating element. Later when the heating elements comes on to bake that fine flour dust can smell for a few seconds. until burns off. If the smell doesn't go away after a while then you may have a problem

Tip

Using an Automatic Bread Machine

There are several videos on YouTube about how to bake a bread in a bread machine. Several show the demonstrator pouring liquids, flour oil etc. into the bread pan when it is in the bread machine. This a mistake. You should never be pouring ingredients into the pan while it is in the machine. If you spill milk, flour, oil, butter, etc. it will drip down on the the drive of the machine, onto the heating element etc. Down there it will gum up your drive, smell bad on the heating element etc. You can easily clean a stove burner. You CAN'T easily clean the small cook chamber and drive gear on your bread machine. ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR BREADPAN FROM THE MACHINE BEFORE ADDING YOUR BREAD INGREDIENTS THEN CAREFULLY PLACE THE BREADPAN IN THE MACHINE AFTERWARDS! YOUR COOK CHAMBER (OVEN) WILL BE MUCH CLEANER AND YOUR MACHINE WILL LAST LONGER.

your question need finishing, but for what's written, this is true. Fine flour equals stodgy bread. Strong flour = course ground.
Special strong flour for bread making is better for bread than home ground flour because it rises and aerates better. However I like my heavy home ground flour because I like grinding it. Weird but true.

Hotmail.comWhy does my bread sink in the middle evey time I make it? and it seems to be hard as a rock.

Are you using Strong bread flour? You may be using a poor quality flour. All pyrpose flour is not suitable for bread.
Too much liquid or yeast will also cause bread to sink

My breadman bread machine is smoking. It has 40 minutes left. Should I unplug it or press stop, or just let it go?

the smoke is most likely for flour spilling out and landing on the heating element. Sometimes some dough can fall in between to. Check the outer sides of the baking pan. If you don't see anything down there its probably just a dusting of flour on the element.

Hope this helps

Look very carefully where the bread pan goes in. There is a heating element around it. If the bread pan is too close or touching the heating element ( the round thing running around the wall), it will burn the bread. You can try moving the bread pan away from the heating element. If you try and bend the heating element, it may break the element, so move the bread pan only.

TR440 Breadman won't begin kneading once "start" button is pushed

Hi Mindy.......it takes 30 minutes to PREHEAT this silly machine for wheat bread. I thought I did something wrong, too........I stopped it twice after it preheated for about 15 minutes. I did not want to waste anything so I let it stay in the machine.....I just went to check the machine and it started after 30 minutes of preheating.

I wish they would mention this in the book!!!
