Hi...
This advice is for Kenmore & Whirlpool TOP LOADING washing machines equipped with a DIRECT-DRIVE type transmission. This is NOT for older models equipped with a wig-wag transmission that are BELT driven. Read the instructions thoroughly BEFORE attempting. This is a simple repair that can be accomplished easily if you follow the steps provided:

1. Unplug washing machine.
2. Remove console. This can be accomplished in one of two ways depending on which type of console you have.
a. If the console has removable end caps, the caps lift off by prying on the top from the back of the washer. The cap will pull off towards you as you are facing the unit from the front of the washer. There will be a screw under each end cap that you will need to remove.
b. If the console does not have removable end caps, you will need to slide a putty knife under the front corner of each side and push in while lifting up. There is a retaining clip under each side that has to be released.
3. Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position. Use care not to stress the small plastic hinges that hold it on. They can break easily.
4. Under the console will be two large brass colored clips. Take a large flat blade screwdriver and place it in the groove of the clip on the washer top. With the screwdriver firmly in the groove, push away from you towards the back of the washer. This will release the clips.
5. Disconnect the lid switch connector plug. This is the white colored plug on the washer top under the console.
6. Remove the washer casing. Open the lid of the washer. Using one hand, grip under the front rim of the washer opening. Do not grab the wash tub, just the casing. Tilt the washer case from the back first towards you, slide forward slightly, and then lift up. The entire case comes off exposing the wash tub and components.
7. Locate the water pump. It is a small plastic pump with two hoses connected to it, directly under the front of the wash tub. It is advisable at this point to drain the residual water from the wash tub. This will save you a lot of clean up time later. Here's a helpful HINT: If you own a wet/dry shop vac, remove the drain hose from the standpipe at the wall. Connect the shop vac to the end of the drain line and pull a vacuum on it. This will quickly drain the residual water and leave you with little to no mess. If you do not own a shop vac, remove the lower hose from the pump and place a pan or a bunch of old towels under it & allow to drain.
8. Remove the water pump by removing the two retaining clips. The front of the clip pops off with a gentle pry of a screwdriver, while the back is in a keyed slot. Once released from the pump, turn the clip to remove from the slot. Pull the pump off the motor shaft and remove both hoses. HINT: This is a good time to inspect the drain lines for any debris that may have gotten lodged in the lines.
9. Install new water pump. You may have to rotate the motor shaft slightly to get the slot on the water pump to line up correctly on the motor shaft. Make sure you re-install the retaining clips correctly. Insert the keyed end first, then turn and snap them in place over the pump.
10. Re-install washer case. With the lid of the washer open, place grasp case under front rim and place it on the washer frame. While looking down through the washer lid opening, make sure the front lip of the case is placed UNDER the washer frame and rocked back onto the frame to ensure that the small cleats on the frame fit into the slotted grooves on the washer case base. If you do not get the case seated correctly it will rattle and vibrate while the washer is in operation.
11. Make the back of the washer fits into the washer casing on each side and reinsert the brass clips. Place the clip into the slot on the back of the washer first, and then forcefully push it into the opening on top of the washer. It will snap back into to place.
12. REINSTALL LID SWITCH CONNECTOR. It is easy to forget. If you do not reconnect it, the washer will not work correctly.
13. Reinstall console.
NOTE: This water pump IS NOT serviceable. Meaning, it does not come apart. You can, at times, manage to dislodge items that have become stuck in the pump by slowly rotating the shaft backwards (with the pump removed from the washer) while pulling the object free. Sometimes this works, but sometimes the seal becomes damaged. Panty hose, underwear and the under wire from bras are notorious for getting stuck in these pumps. HINT: It is STRONGLY recommended that you use small nylon garment bags while washing some of your smaller items like this.

I know it seems like a lot, but it is an easy process if you take your time and follow the steps as written.A new washer pump should cost about $40.

How do i disassemble a kenmore elite washer to get to the water pump

In a typical Kenmore top loader, screws are removed from the boittom of the control panel, allowing the panel to be rotated up toward the rear of the unit. This reveals two spring latches. Some dispenser tubing may have to be disconnected prior to removing the cabinet. The two spring latches, when released, allow the cabinet to be slid forward to expose the inner assemblies. The pump is located in the lower front.

Keep getting F21 code and laundry is dripping wet with a puddle of water in machine.

sounds like drain pump is failing or something is in drain area blocking water from moving fast enough.... remove bottom plate on front of unit usually two or three screws at floor in the front of unit.the entire metal piece will come off and you will see the drain pump assembly right inside with hoses attached... not having the model number not sure which one this is but based on the picture it looks like whirlppol parts helped make this unit...some of kenmore is g.e parts and whirlpool made some of kenmore front loader stuff. if it is whirlpool there will also be a clean out behind this panel you can take cap off and clean all debri out and check hoses while in there sometime loose change will get in hoses or right in the neck of the pump assembly... if that doesn't fix then most like ly your drain pump has failed... beware when accessing this area to unplug unit and have 3 or 4 large towels there will be a gallon or so of water in unit..a wet vac works great....

The washing machine runs thru the entire cycle but then stops with 2 minutes remaining and does not spin or drain

if the unit is a front loader then remove the front panel on bottom and there should be adrain pump check for any obstructions in the drain pump...some of kenmore models aare now putting clean outs in this area also and you will be able to open a cap and check for any foreign devri..it sounds like you have a drain pump problem and may luck out by cleaning unit out...be aware there will be water so make sure you unplug unit and have a few large towels ready for the gallon or so of water... these pumps are made with plastic impellars now so the slightest trash inthem will stop operation....hope this helps you out...... p.s a wet vac works great for this process....

I have a Kenmore HE 2 Plus washing machine model 8540912 with F21, F33 & 5D error codes. Can I twist and remove the water pump filter on this unit to check for clogs? Thanks.

The F33 error code indicates a pump drive system error. If the pump ohms out correctly & the harness is secure I recommend replacing the CCU (central control unit).
Please see the following image provided for instructions.

Remember to disconnect power to the washer before attempting access.

We have a Kenmore Elite HE3t front loader washing machine. It has had water remaining in it after a load has finished twice now. I run it spin/drain and it is gone. Haven't had the problem for a few loads...

Hello. You sound like you have one of two problems.
The bottom panel on your washing machine has 3 screws on the bottom part of it that hold it on. You will need to remove these screws and the panel. On the right hand side you will see a plastic pump assembly. Since you have alot of water in the washer, you will need to lean the unit back at about a 45 degree angle so water won't go everywhere. Unscrew the front of the pump using the handle on it. It is either clogged up OR bad. If it is not clogged up, you will need to replace it. Send me the model number and I will get you the part number.

Kenmore model 8566645 Washer is connected and runs but water flows out of the bottom and not into the tub.

Remove the front and side panels if you haVE TO. Look for a bad water pump most common on older units.

The fill tube to the tub from the fill valve is a second likely problem

I water filter located under the tub and in line with the water pump is also a possibility.

A bad hose is not likely but a connection to a hose could be a problem.

Leaking at front base of washer. Not a stream but a growing puddle as it goes through its cycles. Not sure where to look to find the cause. All water and drain connections are good.

Remove the cabinet to access the water pump. It is attached to the motor front/center.
It will be leaking.
No repair, only replacement will stop the leak.
Remove 2 screws on the right and left sides of the control console. The console is hinged. Fold it to the rear of the machine. Unplug the lid switch connector.
Remove 2 clips holding the back panel to the cabinet base.
Remove the cabinet. Motor and pump are at the bottom center.

Washing Machine stops and leaks

A Clothes Washer with the complaint "Leaks in Front" (on floor) can be;

Defective Water-Pump (Very common of non-belt models) - Many water-pumps become defective due to the constant wear and misc. items becoming lodged (coins, necklaces, shoe laces, screws, etc.) or breaking the plastic housing or connections. The water pump is fairly simply to replace and is located on the inside front of the machine.

The water pump is typically a white or off white plastic and will have (2) black drain hoses connected; one coming from the tub and the other going to the drain out the back/rear of the machine. Electric pumps with typically of 2 wires going to and connected to the pump. ** Note: When disconnecting and removing the water-pump, becareful of water remaining in tub that may come shooting/flowing out.
