It is apparent that the timer is gone even prior to the popping sound that started it to totally fail. The good news is yes you can replace it yourself because it is a pretty easy task. All you have to do is unplug the dryer then pull the time knob off with a string. Remove the console rear panel to access the timer and remove the screw attaching the timer to the console. Transfer the timer wires to the new timer one at a time and install the new timer in place. Secure the console back into position and put that timer know back into the timer shaft to complete the repair.

Kenmore washing machine modc1105230080 does not workonspincycle

Sounds like a lid switch. So the machine cycles properly all the way up till the spin cycle? If so, then its probably not your timer. One way to check quickly would be, when the washer stops at spin wiggle the knob back and forth. If it tries to come on during this wiggling it could be your timer.

Removeing timer switch knob

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.########) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

See the following for how to release the console:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=d09053515715195798276a5664b79cf0

Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

If this is a basic top load, direct drive washer, these units may have one of two different timers. (See the Whirlpool PDF).

On models with a metal timer, you have to release the console, pull it forward and tilt it back in order to get to the back of the timer.

The knob screws onto a medal shaft that goes through the timer.

Usually, trying to un-screw the knob won't work by itself since the shaft will also turn.

I found that if you hold the back of the shaft with a thin needle-nosed pliers, you can unscrew the knob.

Then you simply have to disconnect the timer.

The Whirlpool PDF also has troubleshooting and testing procedures for the timer.

The knob on my kenmore elite won't move the timer.

The knob itself turns the switch on . The skirt move the timer position. Try turning the skirt. You probably have a broken knob. On these the knob is held in place with a plastic rod inserted into it all the way. This spreads the tip and retains the knob. To get the knob off to yank out the skirt for a look see you need to pull that rod out a tad to release the knob. 88be11a.jpgThat shaft has a rounded end on it that spreads out and locks the knob on. Clever ain't it? These timers are cheaply made, if you cannot find fault with the knob or the skirt then you is gonna need a timer.

Kenmore is a Sears brand and there isnt too much info on the net as for tech support. Youre best option is to call sears and see if they can give you any over the phone advice, but if the timer switch is getting stuck, it sounds like it may need replacing.

Tub fills with water......that's it.

This is probably a bad timer motor.

Two screws on right/left of head, flip head back. You will see a small motor on the timer that operates when the timer is set. If this isn't running, then you need to replace that or the entire timer. Probably easier to change just the motor.

Best luck in your repair

Kenmore Washer, Loose Timer Knob

There should be a spring clip that holds the timer knob on. It or the timer knob may need replaced. Here is a picture of the timer knob and the spring clip. Sure hope this helps and best wishes.

My Kenmore 90's series washing machine will not move into the spin and rinse cycle unless we use a screwdriver to put pressure on the switch. Does this mean the switch is bad?

The timer you have has a bunch of small gears inside. The case is made of plastic. Yes the timer is most likely shot.To get the timer off you grab the black plastic rod in back out and this releases the knob. Then you can access the screws holding the timer on.ec1c7f4.jpg
