Question about Yamaha RX-V661 Receiver

1 Answer

Sound turns on and off intermittantly through unit

We set up the receiver 5 days ago, and it's been working fine until this morning. I turned on the receiver, and no sound came through any of the speakers (surround sound) or sub on all inputs. Then all the speakers and sub came on after about 5 minutes - the sound will work for anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 hour at a time, and radomly shut off. The door of the entertainment center is open, so it shouldn't be overheating. I have tried unplugging the power cord for a minute, and plugging it back in. All of the speaker wires are securely attached and not touching.

You may have a bad protection relay or solder joint at the relay mount position. This relay prevents power supply "thumps" when the unit is first turned on, and also shuts the amp down when there is an overload problem....accordianman

Yamaha rx-v371 shuts off 2 secs after turning on

Return unit to place of purchase, this is clearly a manufacture defect. The warranty will cover full replacement, do not allow them to attempt repair on the current item because you will be back and forth until warranty runs out.

I have a Harmon Kardon AV-230 model that i purchased 7 yrs ago. The other day i was watching tv and all of a sudden the receiver shut off but the stdby button was lit amber color. I tried to turn it on...

You may be on the right track. Does the unit feel unusually warm when it dies? Keep it out of direct sunlight (this is ALL in the manual), away from humidity and moisture, avoiding drafts, dust and vibration and make sure it is well ventilated.

Also make sure you're not slaving anything that draws a lot of power from its convenience outlets on the back.

The left side sound is intermittent

Sounds like dirt in the volume control or a high resistance speaker wire.
Try switching the right and left speaker wires and see if the problem changes.

Yamaha Receiver (rxv3000) has intermitent power problem

I also had the very same problem.....I followed the instructed already posted indicating that it was a speaker problem....Instead of disconnecting all speakers at once, I went pair by pair.....and tried to turn it on and see if unit then would stayed on...not really...I continued with the same process....until I got to the last set of no avail...

Eureka!.....a few minutes, say 5 or 10.....I turned on the unit and stayed ON!! ! ! ! ! !

Than I re-connected all speakers......and the unit is working fine.

I was at the point of purchasing a new this day I do not have a clue of what caused the unit to go into "protective mode".....

Folks, try this route......and it worked for me....It was a matter of luck...perhaps...I do not know.

Turns on, but nothing happens

If you bypass the 606 , do all the other units still work?
and, are there programmable setting inside the unit that might need a reset?

The unit fails to turn on, 2day's ago it worked fine i've put it in stand by with my remote. Today it won't start i've disconected everithing, unplugged power sply for halt an hour. Still don't work...

If you don't mind resetting all of your personal parameters you might want to flush everythign and start fresh.

The manual says to Hold TONE CONTROL and PressStanby/On to turn the unit on as if you want to reprogram it.

Press Program </> to select Preset

At this point I would think we would had established that it CAN turn on or not.

If it's ON, Press STRAIGHT until CANCEL appears, then Standby/On to Cancel and turn it off.

Try to turn it on normally.

Sound lost

I don't know if this will solve your problem, but I have a question.  Does the receiver sit under another piece of hardware?  Especially one that gives off a lot of heat?  It is possible that the amp or power supply is overheating.  The heat forces the receiver off until it has a chance to cool down.  Then when it turns back on, it starts to generate heat again.  Try moving it out from under any other gear or out from under a shelf so that lots of air can get in the top.  Maybe even try putting a fan over it, just as a test to see if this helps.  I work at a recording studio in Toronto, and we were having the same problem with one of our digital multitrack tape machines (No the studio is not trapped 10 years in the past - we just use tape for backing up and client delivery).  Anyway, early in the day, the unit worked fine.  If we tried to use it later in the day, we would get glitches all over the tape, or the transport would freeze up altogether.  We found that when we moved the unit into a rack where it could really breath, and where it wasn't right under an 8 channel mic pre-amp, that it worked without any problem.  I hope this helps.  Good Luck!
