Question about Samsung DLP HL-P5663W 56" TV

1 Answer

Ballast How can you definitively tell if the ballast that powers the lamp is bad? I replaced my lamp, then needed to replace the color wheel (which was shattered internally), and now there is a clicking sound, it cycles three times and then just shuts off. Is that indicitive of a bad ballast?

Actually my issue is with green spots, picture freezes and must turn off/on several times to get a good picture. I replaced the lamp and it worked fine for a month and now same symptoms

I have a Samsung DLP HL-R5067W. After a power outage, I usually have to disconnect the power cord from the TV to get it to work. This last power outage, I tried disconnecting the cord, checked the lamp assy (seems fine with filament intact) and cleaned out the rear vent. When I plug the TV back in, the lamp flashes for approx. 15-30 sec and shuts off with the three red indicator lights staying on (not flashing). Is this the ballast, and if so, what is the part number and location in the TV?

Yup definitely sounds like the ballast, if not then you have a problem in the power supply. Probably some bad capacitors. Call a local tv repair shop.

Replace lamp and lamp light continues to blink and will not come on. lamp is good but will not power up. fan is on so there is power. any suggestions?

Usually if the lamp light starts blinking and it will not fire up after the lamp is installed then that means that you still have the lamp door of and the toggle switch that detects the lamp door being off is activated and so the tv is in failsafe mode and is not turning on to protect you. If you know that you have the lamp door back on and the switch is pushed back into place as it is supposed to be then the issue is most likely your ballast. The ballast can appear to be the same symptoms as the lamp. If the lamp itself was not damaged or broken then its possible the lamp was fine all along and the ballast is bad. The ballast is the board the connects to the lamp and charges up the high voltage to fire up the lamp. If it is damaged in some way then the lamp will not fire. Just as a precaution you can test the wire connected into the ballast from the power supply board and make sure you are getting voltage. If you are getting voltage and the lamp is good and the lamp door toggle switch is not activated or the lamp temp board wire is not unplugged then you definitely have a ballast problem. Those are the only components that can cause the lamp to fire. The lamp temp board is a little board on top of the lamp housing that just has 1 small wire connected to it that is a thermometer. If that is unplugged the lamp will also not fire. So, requirements for fire lamp:
1. Power from power supply board to ballast
2. Ballast converting power out to lamp
3. Lamp door switch must be suppressed
4. Lamp temp board must be plugged in and functioning.

Lg 42 inch projection tv has green light and orange light

It is a possibility, if the indicator lights are on it definitely means something is wrong in the light engine system, it could be your lamp, ballast, color wheel or dmd board, when it comes to LGs it's most probable that your lamp might go out. You can replaced it to see if it fixes your problem, if it doesn't, there's a chance it might be yoru ballast.

Samsung DLP HLM-617W/XAA

with lamp out (door closed) the ballast should "strike" or give an arc sound, trying to fire the lamp. If it does not do that maybe the color wheel is not spinning up - has to do that first.........then the set will try to fire the lamp

Power issues (Tv not turning on) were typically due to faulty ballast. While the TV reports a bad lamp it is the ballast itself causing the issue. Samsung is well aware and will replace both the ballast and the lamp (since the lamp can be prematurely aged but the bad ballast). After replacment most people stop having issues.
