Unfortunately these devices can only understand USB devices that are formatted to FAT32. Is your external disc formatted to this?

Also there maybe a problem in enough power going to the device. So its advisable to have an external powersource connected to the device.

Recommend me branded USB drives ?

Honestly, any USB brand will cut it for you. What you want to ensure is that you are purchasing the proper version (1.0, 2.0, or 3.0) for whatever device the key will be associated with. Also make sure you don't buy too little or too much memory. But if you know all this and you just want a reliable brand, I would go with SanDisk.

Troubleshooting WD Passport 320 GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drives

If you plug your Western Digital Passport External USB 2.0 hard drive to a USB socket in your computer system, & the hard drive's light is on but there is no spinning sound, then you might be experiencing a defective interface circuitry.

These devices have a USB-to-SATA interface inside their enclosure. If you can find another enclosure with a similar interface (or buy a new enclosure), disassemble your hard disk enclosure, get the hard drive out & attach it to the interface in the other enclosure & see if it works.

Another possibility is that the interface could be fine, but the hard drive itself died. To test this possibility, try attaching the hard drive itself (after getting it out of its enclosure) directly to a PC. Since the hard drive is a SATA drive, you will be able to do this easily.

Is my external hard a plug and play?

In most computers that are encountered, devices that are plugged into the USB ports are "plug & play" capable. There are numerous scenarios that can turn this function off inadvertantly such as a virus, data corruption or driver changes. In order to fix the issue and make an external device, such as a Western Digital Passport Elite hard drive "plug & play" capable, a user will have to make a few system changes. Click "Start" and "Run," then type gpedit.msc Click on "Administrative Templates," from the tree then click on the "System" folder. Double click on "Turn off Autoplay." Select the "Disabled" option and ensure it applies to all drives. Hope this helps,

How to transfer movies from dvds to my western digital passport essential

Assuming you have a DVD drive and your HD is already set up, all you have to do is insert the DVD, open "My Computer", open the DVD drive folder and copy the files inside it to your HD folder. If you have trouble playing the video, download the VLC player, it plays almost anything, if you still have trouble, right click on the video folder and click play with VLC player.

My toshiba external hard drive wont work in 360, the portable device option is not highlighted once it is connected, the external is getting powered from the xbox though.

When you first put in your External hard drive to your computer, did it ask you if you wanted to use as a sort of passport or did it not give you any options at all like Usb flash drive. you should not have any special program on for the External hard drive. It should just be set up to store data and nothing else. I had a similar dilemma with a WD passport. When i put it on my 360 it did not work. then i just made the drive like a plain storage device and the xbox could read and play my files.

How can I install the driver for My Passport WD External HDD 500GB online?

It is a "plug-and-play" device, and Windows XP/Vista/7 are "plug-and-play-aware" systems.
So, just connect it, and Windows should recognize it.

Are you getting any error-messages?

My western digital passport drive has the following issues. 1. when I play a movie it keeps stopping and starting like its streaming. then it will eventually freeze up. 2. I have tried several times to...

First, check your computer to make sure it is keeping up with the job. In Windows, open Task Manager (Control-Alt-Delete), click on Performance, and look for the CPU graph. If it is maxed out, or if the amount of memory in use is greater than the physical memory installed in the computer (using the internal hard drive for memory), the computer is having trouble keeping up with the workload. Quit any programs not needed for playing the movie, including those resident in the task bar. You may also need to do a scan for Trojan Horses stealing processor time. Add more physical memory if necessary and possible. In Mac OS X, open Activity Monitor and check the CPU and System Memory tabs.

There are at least three external hard drive models that meet your description, including one designed for playing movies (Passport AV). If you are running Windows, try the "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows" download for the Passport Essential to see what it finds. Save it and install it on your computer's internal drive, then use it to check the Passport unit.

If that doesn't fly, you may have to disassemble the Passport and install its hard drive as a second internal hard drive in a computer. Use a S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic program (Data Lifeguard, or one of the Linux equivalents) to inspect the drive's internal problem tracking registers. If the diagnostic program works on the Passport, but reports problems with the drive mechanism, that's your answer.

If the drive works properly inside a computer, but misbehaves in the Passport case, you have a problem with the cable, the USB interface, or the Passport's power supply.

Regarding the firmware updater: It is not for the plain-Jane Passport Essential model (WDMExx3200). The program should be saved and run from your computer's internal drive, not the targeted Passport drive (the drive can't do read operations while its firmware is being updated).

Do I need a disc to install

This is a external hard drive and no need for you to install any software to a computer in order for it to work , this is a plug and play device you just need to wait for the computer to recognize it after you plug it to a USB port and once its recognize its ready to use.
