SOURCE: Poulan Pro Blower starter string

This usually happens at the most inopportune time. You go out mow the lawn, pull the rope and it comes out in your hand. Here's how to fix it yourself.
First, we'll talk about a simple rope replacement. In most cases you will have to remove the blower housing from the engine to get to the underside of the rewind starter where the rope is. We'll assume at this point that the spring is ok and you can just wind it back up again. You can check the spring by turning on the hub in a counter-clockwise direction and see if the spring gains tension. Do not try to remove the spring from its holder or you may end up having to take the mower in for service.
1. Remove the rope from around the hub. Since there is no tension, it should come right out. If you are lucky and it broke near one end, you can probably just re-use it. If it is badly frayed or too short, you will need to find a replacement at a local hardware store.
2. Attach the handle or tie a knot in one end of the rope so it will not wind all the way into the hub. You also may want to burn the rope ends to keep them from fraying and causing a problem in the future. Set the rope aside where you can grab it once you wind up the spring.
3. Wind the hub in a counter-clockwise direction using your thumb to keep it from unwinding, until the spring is tight. Then let it come back slightly so the rope hole in the starter housing lines up with the rope hole in the hub.
4. Stick the rope through both holes while holding the hub from unwinding. This is tricky because you don't want the hub to unwind on you before you have the rope secured in it. A pair of needle nose pliers or a small screwdriver or pick may help get the rope through.
5. Tie a half hitch knot in the rope after you have it through both holes. While holding the rope, release your hold on the hub and let the rope slowly pull itself back into the starter.
6. Put the blower housing back on and your ready to start the engine & mow.

No, there isn't.
You have to take it apart, and make sure the spring doesn't get loose, or you'll have to rewind it. There's probably enough to just re-knot it if you're real lucky. Would it be for sale?

At all? Check the plug to see if it's wet. If so you are getting fuel so problem is spark. Get a new plug and gap properly. What else have you tried?

I will give you instructions for fixing the recoil unit on a trimmer. The blower instructions are the same, just the configuration is different. The key is to maybe have someone help you.
OK...with the starter/recoil unit OFF the machine, with no rope in it, and no tension on it.....grasp the little nylon hub and turn it (clockwise is I recall) round and round 6-7 times until you feel the recoil spring get nice and tight...DO NOT LET GO OF IT!...hold it in place and then JAM the starter/recoil unit in place (still tight) inside it's housing by either clamping it with a tool like vise grips or by sticking a screwdriver thru it and thru the vents in the cover. If you have ANOTHER person to help of you hold it in place....and make sure it is lined up to where you can NOW insert the new lenth of pull rope thru the housing hole and into the hole in the pulley.. Always use new rope....Feed the end thru the hole in the recoil unit and tie it off, by wrapping it around itself outside the nylon hub and then screw the little self-tapping set screw back in holding the rope down. OK...then feed the opposite end into the hole in the front engine cover and attatch the T pull handle....Now mind you, you are still jammming or holding the recoil in place against the spring!...Now, unclamp it or unjam it and slowly let the recoil pull the NEW rope you just installed back onto the pulley. Make sure it is fastened well on top of the pulley around the nylon hub and also fastened well onto the T pull handle. That is it. Then reconnect your wires, put your throttle cable back thru the engine cover and reinstall the Torx screws in the cover...and you are done

The recoil spring might be broken or unhooked from the pulley. You would have to remove the pulley to find out what the problem is. But doing this, the spring could uncoil from the spring housing and it is dangerous that it could hit you in the face if you are not very careful. The spring is very difficult to rewind into the housing. I would bring it to a shop if I were you. Whatever you do, good luck.

Recoil broke. wont retract string

Hi, this job requires a little patience and manual dexterity. First, remove the coil from the back pack. Then, keeping your thumb on the inside of the coil, remove the screw that holds the recoil assembly together. Sometimes it may be just jammed and actually snap back as you loosen the screw. If not then the coil needs to be set back into it's groove. If you are able to accomplish this, then you can install your new recoil rope.
