Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

I own a 4 year old 61" Samsung HD DLP TV. I replaced the bulb about 12 months ago. At bout 2 months ago the TV has started turning itself off sporadically. Sometimes it will go a several hours in a row and then turn itself off or it will go off every 5-10 minutes. I removed the small back section and dusted the inside. That seemed to help some but with in a short amount of time it is back to turning itself off. The replacement bulb should be a samsung approved bulb. Is it a bulb issue or an over heating issue? How do I diagnose the problem? and if it is a heating issue how do I repair it? Thanks, GP

Thank you very much for the information. Do I need to get a repair person to do this or can I buy these parts and easily do it myself? How costly is this repair?

Hi GP.

I was going to write on this yesterday, then I left because the problem is common on Samsungs, but there are more different problems causing shutdown.

When you call Samsung they usually answer that the problem is likely Digital Board (about $400) or DMD Board (other expensive part), and give you the highest possible quote, so to cover the repair problem whatever the problem.

If problem happens after lamp replacement, then it is often either a defective lamp cage safety switch, or a faulty ballast board.

There is a huge number of posts on the problem, all pointing at different faults. If for example convergence or PSU board started failing one year after lamp has been replaced, that would be the problem.

Concluding, unless there are additional symptoms, the only way to say what the problem is is by disassemblying and testing the set at component level.

Let me know model number of the set if tou need more detailed info.
Also let me know if there are additional symptoms (eg. BLINKING CODE, colors not matching or distorted picture before shutdown, popping noise, audio but no picture, etc.)

Regards.

Ginko.

It's neither of them - it's a problem in the power source:the filtering capacitors have aged and they have lost part of their isolating characteristic so a much bigger current is shorted to the ground thru them.
Because of that the power source is overstressed and when - due to the content of the program you are watching, like in case of a very bright scene, or very loud one - more current is needed , the trigger level for the protection system is reached = the tv just shuts down.
You need to replace every singe electrolytic capacitor,

The parts are easy to find - you can get them very cheaply online ; here is a site
    http://www.westfloridacomponents.com/Ele...
. They will cost you less than $25 all.

But to install them you must unsolder the old ones and , because of the very high current that pass thru them, their soldering must be perfect. And you must not overheat the board while doing that. If you aren't sure you can do that properly then call a repairman - it's a 2 hour job to do it well and what will cost you depends on what the local guys charge per hour.

It will be easier if you would let the repairman obtain the capacitors himself, no more trouble for you for a small saving.

More than likely you have a power board that is failing. Since the TV is so old I doubt it is under warranty still. I estimate it would cost you anywhere between $300-400 to repair that problem so it may be time to switch to a newer LCD TV.

Samsung Dlp completely shuts off and then all three lights flash

Sounds more like the TV is overheating. The lamp cooling fan may be seized or not spinning fast enough. If the TV gets hot enough to trip the thermal, it could rupture the lamp.

take off the lamp access door on the back and find the safety switch that the door pushes on. unplug the connector from the switch and put staple into the connector to short out the cable. Switch is probably bad. worked for me. same problem.

Samsung DLP TV won't turn on

This sounds to me like one of two possibilities. First, check your ballast. If you're going through bulbs faster than you think you ought to be, you may have a ballast that is overloading. Its the 3" x 8" circuit board that connects directly to the bulb. They are plentiful and often cheap. Thats what I'd try first. If that doesnt' do it, I would invest in a new power supply board. That the board that the tv power cable hooks directly in to. This should give you a start, Comment back if you still need further help. Good luck.
