Question about Sony RCD-W500C 5-Disc CD Recorder

1 Answer

After years of working fine my Sony 5-disc CD recorder has suddenly decided that every disc is a "data disc." The music blanks that have always worked in the past are now being read as "data disc" when I press record. Any hope? Thanks.

Mine was doing the same thing. I even posted the same question. Then after reading through other questions, I found that the discs I was using were CD-R that would only record on my PC. They are Data Discs. There is a different kind of CD-R and it is for music only and they are marked CD-R MUSIC. The little compact disc symbol on the package should read recordable underneath. I had not used mine in awhile and forgot to look for that on the package. Now mine works, Hope yours does too.

Manuals are always a good place to start.

You ARE using a data disc. It's literal. RTM and see that it only uses blank media that say "Digital Audio" on them.

Plays fine on both decks, but does not record in any mode.when press rec, the indicator switched from saying "blanc disc" to "data disc" i got this deck used last year. not sure if it...

Check if the blank disc you are using is compatible. It sounds like the discs you are trying to record onto are not compatible with the unit OR you are trying to record in the wrong mode (Synchro v direct see below) It will only record onto CD-R or CD-RW discs. Also read the instructions for recording as there are a number of recording modes depending on menu settings.

Hi. Can not find a brand of blank disc that works. All say DATA DISC. What kind and where can I obtain them please.

I have read an awful lot about this unit including reading the manual thoroughly. I now believe that this Sony unit is a very clever unit, it is very particular about what items it will copy and very particular about what it will copy items on to. I, for years, have had the 'Data Disc' issue however I have invested in Maxwell XL-II 80 Music CD which appear to work perfectly with this unit.

When u put a blank CD in it will say blank disc when you push REC. it will say Data disc and with a different CD it will say -79.59 e-mail me at j.smedley@moreheadstate.edu

I think your problem is that you are using a blank CDROM type disc in a CD Audio recorder. If you "burn" cds on a computer, it does not matter what type of cdr you use, but if it's for a stand alone CD Recorder (that you ise with hifi/dj stuff) you MUST use CDR AUDIO discs (sometinmes it will even say FOR MUSIC)

Use blank media with the words "audio" or "music" printed on them. It's in the manual.

You need to use CD-R Music or Audio blanks, not Data. It's part of the spec for home CD recorders to reject blank data disks.
