Have you tried running it in the compatibility program?
go to start
then all programs
then to accessories
then to program compatibility wizard
I don't say it will run it, but I've used it many times because then program wouldn't run any other way

Windows xp cd with sp3 installation

In BIOS change the boot order such that CD/DVD comes first. You will also need to make sure your hard drive runs in IDE mode since Windows XP doesn't support sata drives by default. FYI XP is going end of life early 2014.

When i switch my computer on, windows profession window appears and say press ctrl+alt_delete to begin, I do that but nothing happens. My laptop i'm using is a Dell Latitude D630

Step 1 - Remove non bootable media
Remove any floppy disks, CD's or USB sticks from your computer and restart.
If NTLDR is missing error appears again, Do the Next Step.

Ensure you boot the system from the CD. The system will then boot into the Windows XP Setup.
At the welcome screen press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console
At the recovery console, select your Windows XP installation and enter your Administrator password if requested
At the command prompt issue the following commands and press ENTER after each command:
fixboot
fixmbr
Remove your Windows XP CD and restart the computer
If the NTLDR is missing error appears again after reboot, Try the Next Step.
It is sometimes necessary to run or re-run the Windows XP Setup repair process
If it did not solve your issue re-insert your Windows XP CD and run Windows Setup again

You cannot see HD because there are no apropriate SATA drivers included in windows XP CD. So you need to create custom windows XP installation CD

To install windows XP in that laptop u will need to create custom windows XP CD, how will you do that:

  1. Download nlite from http://www.nliteos.com/
  2. Download drivers for that laptop
  3. Download service pack 3 for windows XP
  4. Install nlite for windows XP and run
  5. Follow instructions and include SP3 for XP, all the drivers for laptop and create ISO Image
  6. Burn ISO Image
  7. Install Windows XP
  8. Good Luck

I am having trouble running setup on my desktop

To resolve this problem, replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file:
  1. Use the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD to restart your computer.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to select the To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R option.
  3. Type the number of the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted, and then press ENTER. If no administrator password exists, just press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command): cd \windows\system32\drivers

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.oldNote This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, the file is missing.
  6. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\driversWhere cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD, and drive is the drive where you installed Windows XP.
  7. Remove the Windows XP CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit at a command prompt, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.
  8. Restart the computer.

Install Xp From Dos

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

  1. You've probably got in your hands some recovery/restore CD's from your PC vendor. BEWARE. For example, Fujitsu laptop CD's are only used to restore the HDD to its original factory state! Fuji will not give you a XP CD to 'recover' the hard disk, only to 'restore' it. Nice huh?
  2. Use a Windows XP retail CD ,better than having to use the OEM's restore CD and lose all your data.
    • IMPORTANT: if you've got Windows XP SP2 installed, you CANNOT use a Windows XP SP1 CD. The recovery console from the SP1 CD will not accept even the correct admin password when run on a Windows XP SP2 HDD. You must run the recovery console from a modern SP2 CD, then you'll be able to correctly login to your Windows XP install on the HDD.
  3. Pop in the Windows XP CD, reboot, making sure to select boot from the CD option. On some PC's you'll have to hit DEL on reboot to enter the BIOS and select boot from CD ROM. Other PCs you hit F12 while booting up.
  4. WIndows XP will start to load. Eventually you will be prompted to select between Setup Windows and Repair Windows. Hit 'R' for Repair Windows. The RC (Recovery Console) will look for existing Windows XP installs to repair. Usually you have just the one, listed by the RC after it has scanned your disk, so type '1'. If the RC doesn't find any Windows Installs...you're in trouble. Note: Windows RC can find a Windows install when Windows Setup can NOT find one, so the RC seems more low level and reliable.
  5. Usually your admin password is blank, so just hit a return when prompted for a password.
  6. Type 'help' for the commands that the RC can run. You won't be able to access any folder other than C:\Windows and C:\ top level. The next two steps are probably only safe if you have a single partition on the whole disk.
  7. Try 'fixboot'. This re-writes the boot record.
  8. Try 'fixmbr'; again, this may damage a partition table that it doesn't understand, so be wary of taking this step... you may want to use this as a last resort and only if you have a single partition on the disk.
  9. Run CHKDSK /P C:
  10. If you get errors still, rerun or also do a CHKDSK /R C:.
  11. If the CHKDSK finally succeeds without errors, then you should be able to exit from the RC and reboot OK.
