Question about Kenmore Dryers

1 Answer

Am renting this apartment and the Kenmore Laundry Center (#417.999175120) is working okay, but dryer seems to be getting too hot on low or mid-range temperatures. The duct has been cleaned and the vent hose is brand new, with a short run to the exterior vent. What I note is that the insulation on the door--looks & feels like cardboard, is very discolored and bulging toward dryer interior, almost touching the mesh lint screen that slides out for cleaning. It looks dangerous and it appears to be blocking airflow thru the screen and therefore downward to the rectangular vent in the bottom frame for the dryer door. Is this a significant problem for venting, and moreover, is this a potential fire hazard?

This is reassuring advice that there should be effective control before serious overheating occurs and helps me explain to the owner/manager what needs to be looked at and why. Thanks!

It is a potential fire hazard but the dryer is equipped with safety components that trip off when the temperature is extremely high then the dryer will stop working and will not work again until the safety components are replaced. The problem is likely the cycling thermostat or high-limit thermostat not working to regulate the dryer temperature. These components should turn off power to the heating circuit when the temperature reach their temperature ratings.

Dryer has no heat

I have one of those Kenmore "Laundry Center" stacked washer/dryer units. It comes built that way - it is not two units stacked on top of one another (if there is such a thing).

My guess is that it is at least 13-14 years old now (it came with the house I bought) and about 3-4 years ago, it also stopped heating. The dryer would run for a couple of hours and all of the clothes would still be damp and the air in the dryer was not warm or hot.

I searched online and found that the usual cause is the heating element wire was probably burned out if the dryer was otherwise running all right. I found some repair instructions online and the procedures to take the dryer apart (can't recall where - just Google it).

The heating element is like a long coiled resistance wire, similar to what you would see in a toaster but heavier duty. It is strung in a circle behind the dryer drum tub to heat the air that enters the dryer.

If you've ever looked into a toaster when toasting, you'll notice that that thin resistance wire glows red hot which generates the heat. Now imagine that thin wire being red hot and the dryer tumbling, causing constant vibration. It's amazing that the heater resistance wire doesn't break more often!

A pretty handy DIY-er can take the dryer apart and replace the heater wire, but the challenge is getting the stacked unit out in the open somewhere where you can work on it. You need a fair bit of room.

My advice would be to also buy the drum belt replacement kit to also replace that at the same time. If you're going to go to the trouble of taking the dryer apart to replace the heater wire, you might as well replace the drive belt and associated felt pad, etc. at the same time. You DON'T want to have to take the dryer apart again a little later to change that part when it breaks. (It's like a timing belt on your car - if you're doing major work on your car and have the engine apart and it's "about time" to replace the timing belt per the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, might as well do it a the same time to save on repeating the labor again.)

My dryer is getting so hot that it is shutting itself off mid cycle. I can restart but it only runs a short time....gets really hot and shuts off again!!

Check your entire vent tubing from the outside vent to the line coming out of the back of the dryer.
Overheating indicates low air discharge flow. The air in the dryer must move out quickly so the heat doesn't build up too much.
Try that & post back.

41799980100 Kenmore Laundry Center dryer themal fuse blows

you need to clean out the dryer.the thermal fuse is a safety switch so you don't have a fire when the dryer is running to hot.blow out the vent line with a leaf blower, unplug the dryer and make sure the outside vent is clear.next you need to clean out the duct that the lint filter slides into and vac out the inside of dryer where the motor is,do this once a year, your clothes will dry on time,no fires and you'll save on parts.let me know how you make out

ONKYO M282 AMP seems to have lost all mid and low range

It's probably salvagable but I doubt it will be cheap or easy. Most likely you have one or more ruined output transistors. If you're into taking things apart and soldering, it might be easy for you. Just look
for abnormalities on the transistors, usually a little hole in the center of them or blistering. Replace those and you'll either have it back to sounding good or much closer to it. Most output transistors do not fail without showing visual evidence of it.
