Thanks. Most postings talk about screws on the front or removing the endcaps to find the screws. I see the screws you are talking about.

Kenmore 20712 goes trough the first cycle OK but when it comes to draining and spin cycle it stops.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts. (20712 is a stock number for a number of products, you'll need the full model number that starts with 110. )

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

How can I replace a lid switch

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Then see the following for how to release the console and remove the cabinet:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=f49470e9067a2e9069fb3de3c0833ad6

Some models don't have removable end caps on the console. These usually have spring clips under the ends of the console that will release if you slip a thin putty knife between the console and cabinet.

With the cabinet off, you should be able to locate the lid switch and replace it.

Where is the pressure switch located on the kenmore washer?

If this is a Kenmore washer as the one you have this question posted under, the pressure switch is located inside the operator console directly behind the load level/load size selector knob. You can access it by removing the back on the console. If the console does not have a removeable back, it will lift up by one of the following means:

1. If the console has removable end caps, the caps lift off by prying on the top from the back of the washer. The cap will pull off towards you as you are facing the unit from the front of the washer. There will be a screw under each end cap that you will need to remove.

2. If the console does not have removable end caps, you will need to slide a putty knife under the front corner of each side and push in while lifting up. There is a retaining clip under each side that has to be released.

3. On some models, there is a screw in the back of the console on each that you loosen. With the screws loosened, the console with slide forward a little, then lift up.

With the console accessed, the pressure switch is a round cookie shaped device with an electrical connection and a small air hose attached.

If you are uncertain of how to access the switch, please post back with a complete model number (located on a nameplate around the wash tub opening under the lid) so that I may be able to provide you with better assistance.

If you need further assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Is there a reason why you need to access the pressure swtich?

How do I remove the top piece to replace the timer. They are made of plastic and I can't get them off feels like they snap into place.

If the model number you have this listed under is correct, I believe there is a screw on the back side of the console on each side that you need to remove. With the screws removed, the console will pull towards you (as you are standing in front of the washer) then lift up to access the inside.

If there are no screws in the back, then the console will have a retaining clip under each side. To release, you need to insert a putty knife under the console along the front corner of each side and push straight in while lifting up to release.

If you have questions, or if the model number is different, please post back with the correct information so that I may provide you with better assistance. I hope this helps you.

How to remove the control panel on a whirlpool washing machine

If this is a TOP LOADER, the operator console comes of in various different ways:

3. On some consoles there will be a screw located in the rear on each end that you need to remove in order the lift the console.

Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position. Use care not to stress the small plastic hinges that hold it on. They can break easily.

If this is a FRONT LOADER, the console is removed in the following way:

1. Unplug the washer.

2. Remove the washer top panel by removing the three torx-type screws (or 7mm) where it attaches in the rear of the washer. The panel should slide back, and then lift off.

3. Remove the operator console2.gif by removing the dispenser and the scew(s) behind it. Take a putty knife and insert it under the console seam right above the door. If you push in slightly while pulling outwards the panel pops off. Use care not to pull or damage any of the wiring. You can leave the wires attached and simply lay the console across the top of the washer out of the way.

If you have any questions, or need further assistance, please let me know. please include a model number so that I may be able to provide you with better assistance.

I hope this helps you.

How do i remove back

Without the model number of your washer I will not be able to provide specific instructions. It's likely the back panel is not designed to come off.The washer cabinet will most likely have to be removed. Since I do not have the model number I added the instructions how to remove the cabinet. However, there are two different methods of attaching the console to the top. One way will have a screw located at the bottom of console end cap to remove, the other way has hidden screws and you will have to remove the end cap trim like shown in image 2 and 3. After removing the screws follow the instructions in image one. If this is not you type of washer; resubmit your question with the model number.

Resubmit your question with the model number and details of the symptom for model specific instructions and trouble shooting tips.

    Remove console

The console can be removed in a few different ways depending on your model number:

    3. Some consoles have screws in the back that require removing before the entire panel will slide forward, then lift back.

Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position. Use care not to stress the small plastic hinges that hold it on. They can break easily.

You should post back with your COMPLETE model number (located on a nameplate under along the wash tub opening under the lid) if you ruin into any difficulties. I hope this helps you.

PS Is there a reason why you are removing the console?
