How to change color printer hp f4280 to only print black because color cartridge is empty?

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Classic View
Click Printers
Right-mouse click on the icon for your HP printer.
Click Properties.
Change from "print in colour" to "print only in black".
Click OK.

Now, your printer *might* print, or it still may demand that the "empty" ink-cartridge be replaced.

My HP F4280 is only printing in black and white and i have set the settings to colour

surely a faulty cartridge, the good thing is , that when you changing cartridge , it's changing has well the print head , solving the 2 first possible reasons for not printing color. the third one would be the communication from the printer motherboard , so , you can reset your printer to default settings and if that's not working either with the change of cartridge and reset then... it's bad news....

To replace the print cartridges
1. Make sure the product is on and you have letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the input tray.
2. Open the print cartridge door.
The print carriage should move to the far right side of the product. If the print carriage does not move to the right side, turn the product off, and then on.
3. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it.
If you are replacing the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the left.
If you are replacing the black print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the right.
1 Print cartridge slot for the tri-color print cartridge
2 Print cartridge slot for the black print cartridge
4. Pull the print cartridge towards you out of its slot.
6. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging, being careful to touch only the black plastic. Gently remove the plastic tape using the pink pull tab.
1 Copper-colored contacts
2 Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing)
3 Ink nozzles under tape
CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Touching
these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
7. Slide the new print cartridge at a slight upward angle into the empty slot. Then gently push on the upper part of the print cartridge forward until it snaps into place.
If you are installing the tri-color print cartridge, slide it into the left slot.
If you are installing the black print cartridge, slide it into the right slot.
