Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Digital tuner Is there any way I can found out whether the used TV I just bought has a digital tuner? It's a Digistar model LC-20H3D, but I can't find the manufacturer (Prima Electronics) on the Web or through your listing. The owner, a friend, assured me that it was a "digital TV", all set to receive digital broadcasts next year. I've been assuming that I'd need cable or satellite service too. Right now I just have an antenna, and that gives me good enough reception for the amount of TV that I watch. I started to wonder because I read that as long as a TV has a digital tuner, it will be able to receive digital signals "over the air", with an antenna, and that TVs manufactured since some month in 2007 have to include a digital tuner. The back of this one says it was manufactured in April 2005. My friend said it was 2 years old; he clearly can't count. There's nothing in the info stamped on the TV that says anything about a tuner, and my friend says he tossed out the owner's manual. Can you help? Thanks in advance for any advice. Ann

Thanks a lot, Jon. My friend found a card with a phone number for customer service for Digistar products (1-866-220-7116), so I was able to track down the company that provides technical support (pwwservice.com). And, no, it's an analogue tuner, they told me. Darn! I'm in Canada, so the coupons won't work for me. However, I also found out that the deadline for Canadian TV stations to convert is August 31, 2011 and that boxes aren't here in retail stores yet but should be in early 2009. Maybe coupons will be available here after that. Currently I can't view US broadcasts via air anyway, so I can delay decisions for a bit. Thanks for the really quick reply!

Salutations AnnLeo,

The easiest way to respond to your questions is with a question of my own. Are you currently able to pick up any digital broadcasting from your local stations now, such as any HD broadcasts?

If your not then you may not have an built in digital tuner, but not to worry. It is true that if you subscribe to cable or satellite services they automatically covert your signal back to analog so the television can receive the programing. Otherwise I would suggest you look in to options for the digital tuner coupons. Information on the coupon program and other basic frequently asked questions can be found at:

I hope this helps.

How do ihook up a digital antenna to my tv

Dominic, you do not state whether you want large outdoor antenna or simple indoor.
If you bought your HDTV anytime during the past 8 years or so, it should have a built-in tuner for receiving digital over-the-air broadcasts. If you have an older "HDTV-ready" TV that only receives analog signals, you'll need to connect it to a separate HDTV tuner.
link below tells how to install outdoor digital TV antenna.

I have an older Sharp Aquos TV - model # LC-32G4U. I am trying to connect a digital antenna but it doesn't work. Anyone know if I need a separate digital tuner for this TV? Or what else might be t

There is no difference between a "digital" and analog antenna. Either antenna will capture the signal. What you need is a digital converter box to convert the over air digital signal to the older analog type signal your TV needs. You connect the antenna to the digital converter box, and the digital converter box to the TV.
Several years ago, the US government forced peopel to buy digital converter boxes or newer TVs that could pick up the digital signal. Either get a digital converter box or a new TV.

Do I need a digital converter box to recieve a digital broadcast with a Sharp LC-20SH4U TV?

Yes you need a digital converter box. Your model has an NTSC Analog Tuner. It doesn't have a Digital Tuner. This is why you need the converter box.

For example, many companies like Comcast or Time Warner or TCI etc used to broadcast Analog Signals through their wires. Now they have broadcasted only Digital Signals. This makes either your TV Obsolete as a Tuner or you have to get a digital converter so your Analog TV can receive the signal.

Depending on your service, it may be worth your while to get a TV with a digital Tuner.

Then again, it also depends on if you are connecting a box receiver to your TV. For example, if you have Directv or Dish, you would then use your standard Video/Audio or Composite Cables to transmit your signal OR your Out to TV Coaxial whichever works for your receiver. Some receivers have already built in converters . You should really consider all the factors to decide and determine it based on the type of service you have or want.

Does my LC-13S2U have a digital tuner?

Going over you manual for the tv, it doesn't have a digital tuner.
You'll need a digital converter box for broadcast channels.
Indoor antenna will work. But, an outdoor antenna will work best for reception.
If you need a copy of your manual, you can download one with this link:

I don't know if my TV's digital tuner will work when they switch over to digital broadcasting. My TV does have one but during a test it didn't work

The Sharp LC-19SB25U 19 in. HDTV LCD TV has both a NTSC and an ATSC tuner.

The NTSC tuner will stop working in Feb. 2009 but the included ATSC tuner is what you need for after the digital transition.

If this is not the model number or manufacturer of your TV, then please post them.

Digital tuner?

Good question, Mike. I wondered about my fs210 model, too, and I found the answer at a Sony tech-support site.

1. Go to: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DOCS
2. Enter your TV's model number, which, in this case, is: kv-32fs100 (and then click on Continue).
3. At the resulting page, under "Support by Type" in the left margin, click on "News & Alerts."
4. At the next page, click on: 04/02/2008: Critical: Is my Sony® television ready for the Digital TV (DTV) transition?
5. Your TV and mine are analog, but scroll down the page mentioned in #4, above, to see all of your options.

Consumers can determine whether any Sony TV is digital, just by entering the model number and following the steps listed above. ~ Kind regards, Gilda M. (replied 1/23/09)

Is my tv digital compatible or not

https://www.dtv2009.gov/FAQ.aspx What you need to know is whether your TV set has something called a “digital tuner” already built in. If it does, your TV set will work after February 17, 2009. The best way to determine whether your TV set has a digital tuner built in is to consult your owner’s manual. If that’s not possible, you may be able to look up information about your TV set on the manufacturer’s website. Or, you can take an up-close look at your TV set. In any case, you’re trying to find out if your set has an input connection labeled “digital input” or “ATSC” (for Advanced Television Systems Committee, which is the DTV format).

Here are some general guidelines that may help:

TV set made before 1998 was a traditional “analog” set. If you bought a big-screen, projection TV between 1998 and 2004, it may have a built-in digital tuner inside. But chances aren’t great. Only a limited percentage of projection TV sets (and generally only those 42 inches in diameter or larger) included digital tuners before 2004.

If you purchased a new TV set since 2004, your chances of having a built-in digital tuner improve dramatically. Starting in 2004, many of the TV sets sold at popular electronics stores feature digital tuners that will work after February 17, 2009. But it’s not a sure thing. Even some of the newer TV sets are purely display monitors that lack the internal circuitry needed to pick up digital broadcasts. Usually these sets have been advertised as “HD-ready” or “HDTV monitor” sets. That means they can display digital and high-definition signals, but they need help getting those signals in the first place. You’ll still need a special converter or a cable TV connection. Hope this info above helps. Also, check your manual, and if you don't have it some manufacturers, (Philips does for some models) offer the manual on their websites.
