Yes, if you don't use them on a regular basis and generally after about 3 months the ink begins to dry out inside the cartridges - even sooner if you live in a dry, hot place.

It is easy to tell if they are really empty just by taking them out and shaking them.
If they are not really empty, then it could be dirty contacts. I believe they recommend a cotton swab and alcohol to clean the contacts.

Ink light is on. which cartridge needs to be replaced

The printer's indicator lights tell you when to obtain a replacement ink cartridge by flashing when ink is low, and when to replace an empty ink cartridge by remaining on when ink is depleted. The LCD panel also displays INK LOW or INK OUT.
Even if only one ink cartridge is empty, the printer cannot continue to print.

Indicates black ink empty when its not.

Try removing the cartridge and shaking it. Brother printers use an optical ink monitor with a float inside the cartridge. The float can get stuck sometimes and indicate incorrect ink level.
But keep in mind that printers often indicate 'empty' (on purpose) while there is still bit of ink left in the cartridge, to prevent running out of ink during printing. If shaking doesn't help, replace the cartridge.

Wont scan without ink cartridge empty

Failing to scan when an ink cartridge is empty is the normal behavior of most ink-jet printers. They are printers first and the manufacturers put in a lock to prevent air bubbles or dried blobs of ink stuck in the print system.

Replace the empty ink cartridge and then scan your document. To avoid the issue in the future, get a stand-alone scanner.

I wish that I had a better solution for you.

Refilled cartridge, still says it's empty and won't print

Sometimes when cartridges are refilled they won't always work because the ink has dried inside the nozzles and therefore no ink will come out and the printer's ink circuit detects no ink and indicates the cartridge is empty. Also sometimes the Print Head itself will clog up with dried ink and cause this very same problem. You can probably buy a new inkjet printer cheaper than you can have this one repaired. If you can afford it I would recommend replacing it with a Laser Printer that uses powdered toner, they last a lot longer and are more economical to operate than an Inkjet printer.

Hi, I have an HP F4280 printer and the orange light of the color ink level is always lighting so i can't print anything (I am sure that my color cartridge is not already empty). What can I do? Oh yeah,...

There is only enough ink in the HP 60 cartridge to print approximately 200 pages. Also, the ink stored in the cartridge can dry quickly even it it's not used so you may be out of ink or the ink in the cartridge has dried up. Refill your cartridge with a kit or replace it with a new one. The ink level indicator is only an estimate any way. Printer Head needs removal to clean dried ink

Not a cleanable type head, filiment gets burnt, when ink is not around it when printing is done. Ie dodgy ink blocks lines or has air in it and has permanently stuffed the print head, fix on brothers is replace head, cost excessive.,..time for the bin and the newfound wisdom that inks aint just inks.

Ink empy or no inks is read in ink well compartment via a black flag in ink cartridge that must be up and floating as not to obstuct photocell in well area.. check the rectangler bump in rear middle of cartridge. All cartridges must have flags up ie not empty, seeing ink does not indicate a cartridge with ink, a little is always left to prevent air entering system, hence machine calling out no innk cartridge to prevent damage...
