Hi, when you say that when you turn on the switch to the on position to fire the logs, is this poomp you hear a short burst of gas igniting? If it is and it doesn't stay on, this is a sign of your manifold pressure being to high, or also the burners are plugged as we call this poomp, pre- ignition, or delayed. We know that the thermocouple is good as the pilot is staying light and you have a good strong pilot flame, so if the main gas valve is trying to lite by this poof you are hearing, the problem would more then likely be dirty or plugged burners/burner and that's where I would be looking to clean out. Now, if you hit the switch and you hear a noise but no gas starts to flow, the problem would be in the main gas valve coil opening for a split second or just clicking and not opening. In this case, your gas valve has failed you. It would be a standard valve that you could pick up at any appliance parts house, millivolt that you could replace your self. In any case, it just sounds as though you need to get to the burner or burners and check to see if the have built up soot over the last 5 years. I don't believe it is anything serious that you can't repair. A little TLC should take care of your problem. Please don't forget to rate me, and please leave a comment for me under my user name below. I would really like to know what you find and I will be hear if this doesn't solve your problem, but I am confident it will if you do the things I have asked.

Pilot light stays lit but burner on gas logs goes out

You may need a new pilot assembly. Typically one of two issues result from a bad pilot assembly:
1. The pilot won't stay on after lighting it
2. Pilot stays on but logs won't light.

Depending on the unit, you may need a new thermopile or a whole new pilot assembly.

My gas log will light on pilot but will not light fully.

Typically, if the pilot stays on and the logs won't light, the thermopile or entire pilot assembly could be bad. If you have an IPI system [automatic lighting system from remote or wall switch] there may be an issue with the control module.

Pilot light wont stay lit on gas logs

If the pilot lite comes on, but will not stay on after it has had enough time to heat the thermocouple, you got a bad or the wrong thermocouple. It does take some time to heat that thermocouple.

Pilots lites , holds ok for minutes, but once move

Hello KJGreen, It sounds, based on your description, as though the thermocouple is faulty and should be replaced. If the pilot light stays lit and you've left it on for several minutes before turning the knob on to light the log set, then that indicates that the thermocouple is bad.

The thermocouple is a safety device (heat sensor) designed to stop the flow of gas to the burner in the event the gas flame goes out and the pilot goes out. The sensor will only allow the gas valve to open once it has reached the preset temperature.

To confirm that the thermocouple is defective, I would light the pilot light and allow it to remain lit for up to 10 minutes before I attempted to turn on the log burner. If, after 10 minutes, the log burner still won't stay lit, then you know that the thermocouple needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the burner should light, since after 10 minutes, the sensor should be hot enough to signal the gas valve to open.

If you are going to have this replaced, please make sure you use only an approved supplier, since an incorrect replacement part could cause an unwelcome malfunction of the gas log burner. Safety should be primary when dealing with open flame burners.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!
