Write protected I just purchased an Ativa 4GB flash drive. I want to download embroidery files on it, but it says it is write protected. Short of taking it back to the store for a refund, how do I correct this problem?

I was able to write to my Activa 2 gb flash drive. I forgot to remove it before turning off the machine. when I rebooted the machine and tried to add files it says that it is write protected. I cannot find anywhere to turn off the write protection.

SOURCE: Hi I have a Flash Drive 4GB it says it is write protected when

This is a bear of a problem with Transcend owners. You need to use their new Jet Flash format utility. So before doing so, copy everything off your drive to a folder in My Documents. This tool will then format your drive so you can start adding new, more organized data of your choice.

Then, try to remember to keep your data on the pen drive below the 4GB limit. This all has to do with binary math and base 10 math. The drive really doesn't hold 4GB of data, its way lower than that around 3.6GB. So, keep this in mind and keep this format tool around for future use.

I found this download link here, which is dynamic and not static but should work by clicking here.

Should that not work go to this referrer page here. You will have to start by select your product type and then go down through each selection list until you find your model and then the downloads for it will be listed. Click on the Jet Flash utility download eventually.

Personally, I think they could have done this much better and made this way simpler for consumers to find the formatting tool.

Let me know if you run into trouble and if you don't hear from me in 24 hours click on my user name and send me an Ask Me message, I'll get that message and I'll be glad to help you out.

SOURCE: 4GB Attache flash drive says it's locked.

Plug in the stick. wait for it to come up on the desktop then click on it once. (do not open it).
From the file menu select "Get Info"
In the panel that opens up you will see a row of coloured squares. Underneath is a checkbox marked "Locked"
Is it empty or ticked?
If it's ticked, untick and see what happens in disk utility. If it's not ticked that then would appear to be a problem with the stick.
For what it's worth, I did a google on this stick and found that there are numerous posts about it becoming read only on Vista, so it may well be a problem with the manufacturer.

How we can remove write protection from USB flash

Here are the 3 solutions I'm aware of.
1. Look for a small switch on the side and move it to the other position. 2. From windows explorer, right click on stick under My Computer-> properties->take the tick out of read-only box. 3. Download and run this file. It will format your USB even if it is write protected.

Has it EVER worked to the full capacity ???

If not, chances are you have a FAKE (purchased off eBay from some foreign seller ???) - if not, take it back to the shop and demand a replacemnet / your money back.

There are THOUSANDS of fake drives going around = it's DEAD EASY to reprogram a low capacity drive to 'report' higher capacity (and hence increase it's value)

You are lucky yours goes to 512Mb .. a lot of '8 Gb' pen drives turn out to be reprogrammed 256Mb drives ...

Transcend JetFlash V60 16GB pen drive is write protected

Flash drives by default use the FAT32 file system. FAT32 has a limit of 4gb per file. So you could have four 4gb files on your pen drive, but no files bigger than about 4gb. You could use the NTFS format, but it's not suggested for flash drives since it reads/writes much more often than FAT and will make the drive lifetime MUCH shorter.

My 4Gb transcend cannot receive files(copy), it says write-protected

Maybe your flash drive has this functionality the same as floppy diskette. And that is the write protect function. All you have to do, is to locate the adjustable part on your flash drive just like the diskette.

If you are still having issues, please do not hesitate to comment back.
