Question about Kenmore 53701 Dehumidifier

The dehumidifier just suddenly died. We've had it for three years and only use it about five months out of the year. Is it even worth fixing, as it wasn't that expensive...

It is three and a half years old and ices up even at warm temps.

The problem you're having is generally caused by the air intake filter needing to be removed and cleaned and/or the cooling coils need to be cleaned.

I assume you already know how to remove and clean the filter, since you've had the unit for 3 1/2 years, so I won't bore you by addressing that.

The coils can be cleaned with warm water and a mild dish washing detergent using a sponge or rag. Once they have been wiped down, rinsed and dried, apply a light coating of WD40 to the coils.

Hope this helped you & thanks for choosing FixYa.

Hi, Kenmore Dehumidifier 4254501. Brand new last

Now that you've had a chance to vent your frustration, Mike. Did you check the outlet the unit is plugged into, to make sure that it's working? Amazingly enough, I answer questions like yours all the time. And, you know what? 80% of the time, the problem is with the outlet. It's either the circuit breaker was tripped or the interior of the receptacle was damaged. And that's not counting a loose wire connection on the receptacle. So, either test the receptacle or plug the unit into another one, that's on a different circuit.

If by chance you have to replace any parts, your Kenmore Dehumidifier was manufactured for Sears, by Whirlpool. So, parts are interchangeable. And, as my son says, "If all else fails, read the Owner's Manual.

the units low on refrigerant or freon, its normal for these to lose their charge after 2-3 years of use,i repaired a lot of these over the years,a couple of B.P.V.'s and about 9 ozs. of whatever type of refrigerant or freon and they will go another couple of years, all for about $50.00

My 880 home dry is around 15 years old now and when on makes a loud squeaking noise, what is it and is it worth repairing , other wise works fine .regards

sounds like the fan - its worth taking apart and seeing which bit squeeks, if its the bearing try a small amount of WD40 first. try not to get any on the motor of electrics. You can by an electrolube spray if is is the Fan... Well worth taking apart, the latest EBAC models are of very poor quality.
I also had a Homedry for 15 years and the cabinets started to root first... I've had three 2560e's since all replaced under warranty - pcb failures...

My Haier HD601 dehumidifier keeps popping breaker

Hi,
If you are blowing the breaker then you are pulling way to much current on the startup or you have a short in the unit...
either way you probably will be much better off by replacing the unit with a new one... they do not cost enough that it is worth sinking hundreds of dollars into fixing an old one...

Dehumidifier only two years old now doesn't extract water from air since I just started it up again for the summer.

Problem is that you bought a dehumidifier made by the Korean/Chinese manufacturer LG.
Search the web and you will find that you are just one of many whose dehumidifier worked the first year but now draws no water out of the air even though it makes all the right fan and compressor noises.
Most common problem is that all the Freon refrigerant escaped, apparently because the copper tubing cracked and leaked. Penguins beware, there goes the Ozone Hole!
It cost me $14 and an afternoon of investigation and testing of my LG 504EL dehumidifier to figure this out. The fix-it web site "Just Answers" said that it wasn't worth fixing after I described all the symptoms. Tomorrow I will go to the local LG fix-it shop and try to get a replacement to tide me over until I can find a reliable dehumidifier.
Sadly, last Fall I took my 25 year old Westinghouse (made in America) dehumidifier to the dump. Even though it needed me to tune it up every year or two, at least I could fix it and it kept on working for 25 years.
Good luck!

Does Not Collect Water

sounds like a faulty humidistat, but may also be nearly out of freon. I have a GE unit that is also a portable air conditioner...works great for 5 years now...
