Bios password Dell XPS M170 how do you unlock it ???

How to use the jumper to reset the BIOS password on your Dell desktop computer

Summary: If you're prompted for the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) password at startup (before the operating system loads) or the BIOS or CMOS setup is locked, and you don't know or have forgotten the password, you won't be able to use your computer or change BIOS settings. Use these instructions to reset the BIOS password manually using the jumper.
NOTE: This process will not clear a Windows Operating System password, nor will it clear passwords on a Dell portable computer. This is only to clear System BIOS passwords on Dell Desktop and Mini-Tower systems.

Desktop system BIOS password reset.

NOTE: The BIOS is the program that activates the hardware required to start your computer. The jumper is a small plastic covering found inside your computer.

Before you begin

Perform the safety steps in the order below.
WARNING: These steps are for your personal safety and the protection of the equipment.
  1. Turn off the computer and unplug the power cable.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Disconnect all external devices.
  4. Disconnect any telephone or network cables from your computer.
  5. Press and hold thePowerbutton for 10 seconds while your computer is unplugged to release static electricity from the system.
  6. Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself with a wrist-grounding strap or by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of your computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity.

To use the jumper to reset the BIOS password

NOTE: On the DellManualsweb page, download the Setup Guide or Service Manual for your computer. Then refer to the System Board Components section for a labeled illustration of the jumpers on the system board.
  1. Ensure that your work surface is flat and clean to prevent scratching your computer's cover.
  2. With your computer still turned off and unplugged, remove your computer's cover.
  3. To locate the password jumper on the motherboard, look for the letters PWD, PSWD or PSWDCLR.
  4. Choose an option:
If there are 2 metals pins under the jumper
  1. Remove the jumper from the pins, replace the computer cover, reconnect the power cable and monitor and turn on the computer.
  2. After the Windows logon screen appears, turn off the computer.
  3. Again, disconnect the power cable and monitor. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to release static electricity from the system.
  4. Remove your computer cover.
  5. Replace the jumper in its original position covering the 2 pins. This will re-enable password feature.
  6. Replace the computer cover.
  7. Reconnect the power cable and other connections and turn on the computer.
If there are 3 pins under the jumper (See figure 1. below.)

Figure 1. Generic motherboard illustration showing a 3 pin password jumper, you motherboard may vary, see the owners manual for you system for specific instructions.
  1. Remembering which two pins are covered, remove the jumper from those pins.
  2. Reinstall the jumper in a different position. For example, if you removed the jumper from pins 2 and 3, reinstall the jumper over pins 1 and 2.
  3. Replace the computer cover and reconnect the power cable and monitor.
  4. Turn on the computer and wait 5 seconds. Then press and hold thePowerbutton until the computer turns off again.
  5. Disconnect the power cable and monitor again. Press and hold thePowerbutton for 10 seconds to release static electricity from the system.
  6. Replace the jumper over the original 2 pins.
  7. Replace the computer cover.
  8. Reconnect the power cable and other connections and turn on the computer.

How can I reset my system password?

Disabling a Forgotten Password

If you forget the system password, you will be unable to operate the system until disabling the password. Disabling the password involves going inside the computer and changing a jumper setting (twice) on the system board.
To disable a forgotten password, perform the following steps:
  1. Turn off the system and remove the cover.
  2. Move the jumper plug on jumper A to pins 2 and 3 to disable the password(s).
  3. Turn on the computer. Powering up the system with jumper A set to the disabled position erases existing password(s). Before assigning a new system password, you must reset jumper A to the enabled position.
  4. Turn off the computer.
  5. Place a jumper plug on pins 1 and 2 of jumper A to enable the password features.
  6. Replace the computer cover.

I believe that you need to set up the CMOS jumpers inside the main circuit board. For details click on this link (Click Me)
1. Look for 3 pin CMOS clip that says CLR CMOS on the mainboard 2. Take out the jumpers from 1 and 2 3. Put it in jumpers 2 and 3 and wait for 5 seconds 4. Put it back to jumpers 1 and 2

I have a Gateway computer running Win98 that prompts me for a password at startup. It didn't use to do this, so I don't know what password it is asking for. Never used one! It is doing this after a power...

Somehow, the motherboard thinks that a "start-up" password is required.

If you have a desktop computer, turn the computer off, open the case, and look on the motherboard. Look for three pins (labelled 1, 2, and 3), and look for a small "jumper" that is connecting pin 1 to pin 2. Move the jumper to connect pin 2 to pin 3. Wait 5 seconds.
Move the jumper back to connect pin 1 to pin 2.
Turn the computer on -- the "BIOS-password" will have been removed.

Hi,

I would suggest that you do a factory reset on your mobo. To do it, here are the steps you can follow.

1. make sure that computer is OFF and unplugged from the wall
2. locate the 3-pin jumper on the mobo that is near the cmos battery
3. once located, remove the cmos battery
4. then from the 3-pin jumper, if the jumper is connected to pins 1-2, switch it over to pins 2-3
5. return the cmos battery back
6. plug the computer back then turn it ON
7. you will probably get an option to reset or restore settings back to factory, it that's the case, continue with it
8. after doing so, turn the computer OFF again and unplug it
9 remove cmos battery then return the jumper to it's original position
10. put in the battery back then turn the computer on again
11. go to the bios and set it back to the setting that you have set it before
12. check and see if problem has been resolved

* I would suggest getting a new cmos battery if it's already old

Let me know if you need further assistance
