Dude i totally found a solution. Don't listen to all that reformat or changing platorforms mumbo jumbo. Might work, but I figured it out in less than an hour just messing with it. First of all realize that your ipod is not broken! I just fixed one today with error 1418. It was an ipod shuffle on windows. Reformat/Reset-whatever your ipod (i said reformat ipod not reformat to windows or other operating system, see ur manual or apple.com for reformating instructions). After that just plug it in while it is off and a new message box should pop up recognizing the memory. If you are not sure on the reformating instruction just press the **** out of many buttons at the same time. Try different combos too and then plug in until you get a message box that didn't appear b4. A message box should appear that indicates that its actually reading memory from your ipod.

If you are using a mac computer than plug your ipod into a pc and format your ipod to windows. then try putting your music back on from your mac or you can just put all your music onto a pc, thats what i did when i got this error and my ipod works fine now.

I had the same problem, basically error -1 is telling you that you need to do soething before you try and restore it. Have you tried installing the latest iTunes and then shutting down your computer, then trying to restore it again?

When i click the restore button into itunes, it

The shuffle has been plagued by this error code in the past and it used to mean death. Apple has put an update or "fix" for the error code.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238
or if that is not successful, you can do this.
Here is a fix that will work in almost 1418 cases. Low-level format the iPod using a low-level formatting tool. The default format command in XP will not cut it. You will find plenty of freeware and trialware tools on the net. Here is one: http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2006.04.12-HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool/
Just install the application and run it. Choose your iPod “drive” and let it do its thing. After the low-level format is complete, run iTunes and when it prompts you to restore the ipod, do the restore and your iPod is now good as new !! I hope this helps and good luck!

Ipod will not restore

according to the apple website here is some help with the solution.
this is taken straight from apple.

Symptoms When restoring or updating an iPod in iTunes 7 or later, you may see a dialog reporting "An unknown error has occurred" followed by the error number 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439.
Products Affected iPod, iPod mini, iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iTunes 7 for Windows, iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 8 for Mac, iTunes 8 for Windows
Resolution If you are experiencing these errors, begin by updating to the latest version of iTunes. When you have the current version of iTunes, try the following:
  • Disconnect and reconnect your iPod and then attempt to restore.
  • Restart your computer and then attempt to restore your iPod.
  • Disable or Enable Disk Use on your iPod and then attempt to restore.
  • Try connecting your iPod to a different USB port and then attempt to restore.
  • Remove any third-party USB devices you have connected to your computer (it is not necessary to remove your keyboard or mouse).
  • If you use Windows, re-register .dll files as described in article iTunes displays -50 error message when syncing iPod on Windows XP
  • For Windows users, update or reinstall your Windows USB drivers.

I pod shuffle of apple-unknown error 1442

This could be a solution you can try. If you do not have a virus program on your pc and you need to get one to protect your computer, download a free version at www.avg.com and do a scan. It updates itself free, but you may also have malware, so you may have to go to www.zdnet.com to see if there's something out there you can download for malware. You can also try microsofts version of defender. Sounds to me like a software issue. Once you are done, reboot your system and try it itunes again, your device should be automatically recognized. If not, look at your device drivers, perhaps there's something running in the background, or a device incompatibility issue. You can have your computer devices updated at www.drdriver.com for free too. Hope this helps. Rose @ [email protected]

If you come across any one of the above Error or Alert messages, then either your iPod/iTunes has gone corrupted and your iPod may be in for a crash or maybe you’re already facing an iPod crash. iPod might crash or get corrupt due to any of the reasons from hardware failure to corrupt iPod cache to damaged Files or to damaged disk structure.

You must be cautious and try to recover lost data from your iPod from reliable and proved software which is non-destructive and can recover all data—damaged or deleted. Any compromise can thwart your recovery process. Try Stellar Phoenix iPod Recovery Software.

Error 1416 is very similar to 1418 (you might actually get the latter if you try it again). Try following the directions found here. Does the iPod have any other problems (syncing or anything else)? What changed since the last time you restored it (if you ever did)? Also, try disabling your internet security software.
