The fault could be either defective batteries or a defective camera. All you can do is to try a full initial battery charge (24 hours) and if that doesn't work return the camera to the retailer for a refund or exchange.

I had exactly the same issue (and i was not very happy about it either). I took it back to the shop where they swapped the battery but same error message appeared. So they swapped the camera over for me.

I got the same camera today and I got the same message. Did you ever get a solution?

I have the same issue. Posts are popping up all over . We need answers

I've reported the error I've received on my new D3100 to Amazon and they are sending out an immediate replacement. Quite whether it's the battery at fault, or camera, or both, I don't know, nor really care. Just send it back. For info, here's what happened to me

Opened up new camera on Xmas day, put battery on charge. Once charging complete, inserted in to camera. Initially it seemed OK. I was asked to set the date and time, then geographic location. At this point the camera complained about the battery installed with the following error ....

This battery cannot be used. choose a battery designated for this camera

Now clearly the camera was initially happy, letting me set date/time/country etc. but I'm guessing such quuestions are stored to the CMOS battery on board, otherwise when you popped out the main battery for a recharge, these settings would be lost. As such I have a strong suspicion, that in my case, the camera itself is 'probably' OK, and it's the rechargable battery which isn't. Regardess, it's not Amazon/Nikon's issue

Meant to say "Regardless it's now Amazon/Nikon's issue" in the last line of my earlier comment

How can i turn on my Nikon D3100?

Is the battery fully charged. What were you doing on it right before you shut it down. Also make sure your putting the battery i. The right way

Also you can\'t charge the battery by usb into a computer. You need to use the external wall charger.

Unfortunatly the d3100 does not contain am external reset button like the Nikon D3000 but this might help. Take out the sd card and battery and leave it out for a couple hours then, after a couple hours have past reinsert the Battery without the SD card. If it still doesn\'t work shine a flashlight into the battery holder to see if any of the metal connectors are bent.

The only logical explanation after that if it still doesn\'t work is that the battery died doesn\'t have to look damaged it can crap out anytime. I would try getting a new battery and putting it in. If you just got the camera you could tell the place you got it at and they should give you a new battery.

i hope I could help, your going to have to trial and error this one to see what gets it to work.

Autofocus Lens for Nikon 70-300 1:4-5.6 AF25-166-4553 is mountable on a D3100?

You didn't specify the make of the lens. Assuming the lens has a Nikon mount then yes, it will mount on a D3100. The big question is whether it will autofocus on the D3100. The D3100 does not have an autofocus motor, relying on the lens to have one. Not all lenses do. Nikon designates lenses with an autofocus motor as AF-S. Other manufacturers use different designations.
If you need further assistance, feel free to reply to this post and give the make of the lens.

Can someone help me on my nikon D3100 freeze problem?

New battery that is fully charged. My Nikon D3100 has had the problem of freezing every ten or so pics since it was a couple of months old. Still does it today after six months of use. I take a few hundred pics with it when shooting but only shoot once or maybe twice a month.

Have to take the battery out, put it back in etc. each time. Sometimes it allows me to power off and then back on but either way it's a pain in the rear and a serious "time waster".

How to install a Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Basically, you put batteries into the flash, put it into the flash mount on the top of the camera, turn everything on, select a flash mode, and start shooting.
The flash comes with a detailed manual describing its operation. There is a section in the camera manual describing the various flash modes. The SB-700 is fully compatible with the Nikon iCLS system, which includes the D3100.

Since you asked a general question, I can only give you a general answer. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask them.

I have a brand new Nikon D3100. The battery was fully charged and placed in the camera. I took about 4 photos, and then turned the camera off. When I turned it back on the battery wasn't working to...

The solution to your problem is simple, Kathrynbax.

The battery never comes in fully charged. It's always charged only so you may be able to check if your camera is working. I suggest, you take out your battery and put it to charge for exactly 90 minutes as the manual says. Then I'm sure you won't face any such problems.

Hope this solves your problem.

Good day!

Trying to decide between purchasing a Nikon D80 or 3100....any advice?

The D3100 is newer, for what it's worth. It has LiveView and video capabilities.

The D3100 is intended for beginners, the D80 for more experienced users. The D3100 is easier to learn, the D80 is easier to use once you learn it. The D3100 is lighter, the D80 is more rugged.

The other major difference is that the D3100 does not have an autofocus motor, depending on the lens to have one. This means that some lenses (those not designated AF-S by Nikon) will not autofocus on the D3100 while they will on the D80.

The ultimate decision is up to you. Only you can decide which features are most important to you. Also, if you can, try to get your hands on the actual cameras. See which one feels more comfortable to you.
