Jnorsworthy I don't know if the design still holds the same for the Power On switch in the Slimline S3100N, as it does for the Power On switch designs I am used to.

[The Power On switch is located inside the plastic Power On button ]

The one I am used to;
1) Has a square block like shape.
2) The square block is composed of two halves. The two halves fit together like a clamshell.

A) A metal cover with a hole in the center for the top half.
B) A plastic block for the bottom half.

Inside there is a 'plunger', if you will.
The plunger, or post, moves up, and down.
The post is allowed to move up, and down through the hole in the top cover.

The plunger presses against a thin, flat, disk, convex shaped piece of spring metal.
The outside edges of the metal disk are connected to one side of the Soft Power On circuit.

As the plunger is moved down (By the action of pressing against the Power On button), the metal convex shaped disk flattens out.

In the center of the plastic base is the other side of the Soft Power On circuit. The center of the flattened out metal disk touches a contact in the bottom, of the plastic bottom half of the switch.
When the Power On button is released, the disk goes back to the convex shape.

This generic ATX power on switch, is an example of the type of Power On switch I am referring to,

You may find the above generic example is a replacement for the one in the Slimline S3100N.

This is HP Support, the support page for the HP Slimline S3100N desktop computer, and the Manuals page,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3440586&

On the above page scroll down to the heading - Upgrading and Servicing Guide, and left-click on it.
(It's a PDF file, and may take a few seconds to download. May take a few seconds before you see the first page)

Shows how to open the computer case, and remove the Front Panel. (Front Bezel)

Computer unplugged from power, Observe Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer.

1) Work on a table
2) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open
3) TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case to relieve your body of Static
4) If you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to touch the metal frame again upon your return.

Most Power On button assemblies have two tabs, or three, that protrude out from the body of the assembly. These tabs snap into place into the metal frame of the computer case, and into a rectangular hole. They have a hook on one side. Gently squeeze the tabs in, or out. Depends on which way the hooks face.

The plastic Power On button assembly generally has tabs that hold the Power On switch in place. These tabs are eased over to allow removing the Power On switch. You may find that the plastic tabs are brittle due to age, and the heat inside the computer through the years.
You can use a hair dryer set to low heat, and wave the hair dryer slowly back, and forth to soften the plastic.

On-off switch

Hi Hugh. The 2100 has a rocker switch under neath the button. it is probably broken, or the button has a worn detent spring. If you would like, I could send you a switch kit with the rocker, button, and detent spring enclosed for around 20 dollars plus ship. If you want to investigate further, The side bumbers on the canister slide off towards the front thus breaking the machine in half. You can then access the switch mechanism and see what is going on. I hope this helps, let me know. Thanks, Rene(the Vacuum doctor)

Replace switch on electrolux 2100

The 2100 is an older model which is prone to rocker switch failure. What you see outside is only a switch button. Underneath is a plastic rocker which sits in a grove and pivots back and forth to activate the on off switch.
If you push the switch down and there is no audible "click" you Likely need the rocker itself, especially if you tip the vac upside down and shake it and hear a piece rattling inside or find a broken narrow plastic finger about 1/2" inch long when opened.
However if it clicks and works every 3-5 times, the rocker is fine and you will need the spring mechanism and switch button which you can see form outside.
To remove either the process is the same.
Separate the body by opening the bag cage and pulling the two bumpers forward with a set of pliers. They are locking keys. Once removed, the rear housing will drop off allowing the vac to hinge open back to front. Do this with the vac laying upside down and observe the hinge section of the front bag door .DO NOT REMOVE THE MOTOR. You will need to clip all these componnets back together to reassemble and slide the bag chamber back to seat against the motor with the motor housing engage in the ribbing of the vac side walls.
With the vac open you will only need to remove the spring loaded bag lockout switch and the bag housing it sits on, not the motor or rewind..
Once removed there will be 6 chrome philips screws visible. These hold the top trim on the front of the vac and the front ones hold the on off switch into its housing. At the very front will be two screws going through a black or whitish switch housing. That housing will lift out with wires attached to reveal the switch rocker, etc,. This portion will lift back and out at about 45 degrees of the inner housing, as a unit. The switch button sits atop the rocker via two end tabs and will pop off the housing to reveal if the rocker itself has a broken "finger" or if the button has a weak spring.
The suspect spring is not the coil rocker spring but the thin U shaped spring on the underside of the switch button. Remove the rocker spring with a pair of needle nose pliers.and examine the rocker comparing to your new one.Use more vaseline on the new rocker and if you have it reinsert the clear flex plastic into the coil spring. If not disregard.
Re-installation is the reverse order, tuck switch back in at 45 degrees from back to front.
Pay special attention the the rubber seal at the back of the bag cage.
If anything is misaligned in this body you will fight to reassemble. Don't fight it , back up and look at your work. When and ONLY when it is perfect it will realign and click together like a lego set and the keys will slide in perfectly
You can and should test the vac before reassembling the whole body, simpley slide your hand under neath and activate the switch, with a bag inside the vac.
See now, wasn't that EASY???????
Please post back to advise how you make out. Its a 7 minute process worth $25 for a good tech. A bad tech will spend half a day trying to figure this one out but just go slow and follow the instructions and you will do fine.

I think what you need is possibly a new door handle latch or spring, sometimes the spring breaks or becomes weak, it is unlikely to be a fault with the door lock, as they rarely fail.
To replace , undo all screws holding inner and outer door panels together, and prise the 2 panels apart, be careful the door glass does not fall and break
Take note of the position of spring and latch
Please rate my suggested solution, and feel free to leave a comment.
Thankyou.

Cruise control does not work

Replace the Brake light control switch located in front of the brake peddle under the dash this also turns the cruise off when braking. While driving put your foot behind the brake peddle and pull back toward you while doing this try your cruise if it works there are three possible causes or a combination of all three. Brake control Switch, Loose or sloppy brake pedal not activating the Brake switch properly or week brake pedal return spring. Good Luck.
