I dont have the windows xp cds that came with the computer and had to get a new hard drive how do i go about putting the operating system back on the computer and when i use my other operating systems i am...

Normally the operating system CD is included on the shipment or came with the system. If you dont have the OSCD please follow the steps below.

1. Please call the Dell Tech support by dialing the Tech support contact you can find it manual of the PC

2. You can request from them the Operating System disc they normally give for free if it is only the first time their customer request the item. they will send it to your preferred address.

3. After you received the CD.Please call them back again for further instruction on how to re-install
the operating system (XP) on your PC.They will also help you about the missing drivers, drivers that needs update. Please be remind that not all drivers can be downloaded from the internet. Most PC manufacturer has a separate CD for the drivers and do not worry you can also request the CD driver from DELL.Thank you

I was doing an "update" and when it asked to

Sounds like your update went didn't work right. This could have been caused by a corrupted update file that Vista tried to install or you might have a hardware problem (i.e.bad hard drive). Try running the Dell diagnostics. Do you have any CD's thatcame with your computer? If so, look for one that has "Diagnostics and utilities"listed under the "Contents". You will have to boot from that CD disk. To dothis, power on your laptop and tap the key to bring you to the "Onetime boot menu". Insert the CD and then select CD/DVD drive and hit key. Select the "Run the32 Bit Dell Diagnostics". Next select the "Express Test" and see if any errorsare detected. If no errors are reported, then your operating system software isprobably the culprit.

No mather board disk, because the selsman didnot give the disk and my father has buy the computer 5 years ago and now the shop has been closed

It sounds like you need a new Operating System. You can purchase a new version of Microsoft Windows or go to Ubuntu Linux and get a new OS for Free.
Here is the link to the free system. You can download it and burn a disk or you can order a disk in the mail here

This is a screen shot:

Good luck

I dont have the dell opertating system driver disk how can i get a new one

The usual means of installing the operating system on a new hard drive is by using the Dell Windows XP reinstallation CD (or whichever operating system you had ebfore). If you do not have one, the only chance of getting one is by contacting Dell Tech Support for your region. It may not be free, but if you never received the CD due to Dell's media reduction initiative (and tell this to the representative) they may send you one.

Bad dell hard drive

Hi there,
as long as you have the windows COA code on the back of the computer (certificate of Authenticity) you can just find a good copy of XP Pro, and install it on your machine. When done, you can run the resorce CD and install the drivers.

If you do not have the Operating System disk, you have to find another disk, or contact Dell to get a new one sent to you.

The key is that you have the code on the back of the computer (or top, or side, or wherever.)

Good luck!

seems that it's a SATA drive and the drivers are not included in XP.
There are some tools available to include these drivers into the XP CD.
Search the net for 'xp-iso-builder' or 'n-Lite'.

This is not necessary if your laptop's got a floppy drive (i don't think so). Then the SATA drivers can easily be loaded by pressing F6 when booting from the XP CD.
