Sounds to me like the hard drive has gone out on it.

If you turn the laptop over you will see a couple panels that can be removed... There will be one that has what looks like a circle type design by it that indicates hard drive access... If you cannot find this icon its not a big deal as the screws are just phillip head screws..
1. Remove panels
2. Verify Hard Drive is seated properly. (Might disconnect then reconnect to make sure)
3. If you can tell the make and model of hard drive this would be a good time to write it down. (I.E. Toshiba, Western Digital, Seagate)
4. Replace panel

Try booting the computer again. If the problem continues then you need to online and do a google search for hard drive diagnostic bootable disc for your hard drive. Most of these programs are universal and can do a cross platform basic checks on hard drives.
To go into more detailed diagnostic you are best to use the software designed by the maker of the hard drive.

1. Download test disc and burn
2. Boot laptop from cd-rom using bootable test disc
3. Run diagnostics.

If it fails then you have a bad hard drive and you will need to replace the drive.

DL 160 red ligth alarm hard disc

You could try re-seating the hard drive to see if comes back. Note most configurations on this is set to RAID 1 or 5. Double check before removing drive.

The drive will need to be replaced if the red light comes back (after a few days).

How do i replace hard drive on my acer veriton 3600gt

Depending on the hard drive, it may need to be 'initialized' before the computer can recognize it. This is best done by putting the hard drive in a working computer and going to, if using Windows, right-click My Computer, select Manage and clicking Disc Management where you will see the uninitialized drive.
You will need to create a partition and format it. Then your Acer should see it.
If you don't have a second computer then you will need to insert an operating installation disc in the drive and have that operating system's software format the disc.

When i go to turn on my dell laptop it makes a ticking noise like a clock and then it goes black does not load up and tells me it cant find the internal hard drive.

Assuming there is no CD in the drive, the ticking sound you describe sounds like hard drive activity, or at least a hard drive that is trying to actuate. Did you or someone else drop the laptop? This is normally a result of the reading heads being out of alignment with the disc platters, a damaged bearing, or a power isssue to the drive that is preventing the reading heads reading the disc platters.

Either way, it is normally a harbinger of death as far at the hard drive is concerned, you will most likely need to replace the drive.

SOMETIMES, you can get the hard drive working one last time to pull any data off you need, this can be done by (assuming it is a SATA drive) connecting it to a spare SATA port on another computer and getting the data copied off. One extreme measure is to place the drive in a sealed bag to prevent condensation and stick it in the freezer for a day, before connecting it to the computer.. I used to laugh at this but it does work.. causes the disc platters to contract and gives enough time to recover data before it warms up again

The device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, to "check warranty status" -- if it is still under warranty, you can get a replacement, at minimal cost to you.

Sounds like the new drive is not "Initialized" The drive should have come with software that initializes and formats the new drive. After installing the new drive, boot the computer with the included software disc. Seagate and western digital have software that comes with their drives. If that is not possible, the other way is attach the drive to another computer, access the control panel > Administration tools > computer management > scroll down left pane and select "disc management" > this pane will show all hard drives on your system, including the new one. If the new drive does not show a partition in the right pane, then you have to RIGHT click on the name of the drive, which is the small tan box to the left of where the partition would be and select "Initialize" this is done immediately and is active immediately...no waiting. Disconnect the drive and re-install in the laptop.

No Appearance of external hard drive or symbol on My Computer

hese drive do not usually come partitioned and formatted (as different systems need different formatting)

to do this you need to go into logical drive management to partition the drive. (right click on my computer, select Manage then when the mangement screen comes up select logical drive manager, you should then be able to see your unpartitioned drive which you should then be able to partition and format)
if drive is not detected, remember that these devices need "powered" USB ports, which makes use on some laptops and some ports on PCs difficult as some ports are "low powered" ports, which means the drive can not draw enough current.

this can be resolved by using a "powered" USB hub, to supply the extra power.
