Question about Toshiba Satellite A100-S8111TD Notebook

1 Answer

Laptop will not boot

I have an old Toshiba Satellite Laptop (an A10-S177; Part No. PSA10U-01SVS7). It interfaces with a field instrument and is specific with the instrument, so replacing it is not a good option.

Yesterday while in the field, a corner of it got wet. After drying out, it will not boot.

When on battery power or housepower, the charging light flashes yellow in a repeating pattern of 5 - 2 - 1.

Any help you give me would be most appreciated. Note that the product model selected is not my particular model, but the closest I could come to it.

Thanks,
Brent

Why does Toshiba satellite a10-S177 have 1gb ram limit? Motherboard? BIOS? Or just that 1GB SODIMMs weren't invented yet?

Motherboard

More specifically the motherboard chipset.

The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.
{In reference to the motherboard chipset technology used for this laptop}

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.

The Northbridge chip determines what Processors can be used, what Ram Memory can be used, (Plus the amount), and High-speed graphics.

AGP and PCI Express being High-speed graphics.

A graphics card inserted into a PCI expansion slot is not High-speed graphics.
Neither is Integrated Graphics.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.

{CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short}

How do I remove the hard drive in Toshiba SatellitePro A10 EN? (Removing the plastic cover exposes only the end of the hard drive. I'm reluctant to just start pulling on it!

  • The original Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 HDD is fitted into a Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 Hard Disk Drive cradle - Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 HDD caddy.

      • Gently remove the cradle from the laptop, yes pull on it
      • Unscrew the original Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 Hard Disk Drive & remove it from the cradle.
      • Screw the new Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 Hard Disk Drive into the cradle & refit the cradle into the laptop.

          After applying SP3, my Toshiba Satellite A10 is slow to start. It boots OK but there is constant disk activity for 5min and it is unresponsive during this

          OK after one upgrades to SP3 often it takes ages for the pc to do it's "Housekeeping" I find that it is best to let if do what it will over night and next morning it should be all OK. Also even after you have upgraded, go to windows Update and let is go through, because there were some fixes that needed to be applied after. Also make sure you do not have any applications that defrag, or similar running while this is going on.

          My touchpad scrolling doesn't work, what to do?

          “Hi let’s see if we can fix this problem”
          I. “To “Enable” the Pointer Device using the Touch-Pad, go to, Control Panel, click (“Mouse) in the “Hardware and Sound” category; go to, “Device Settings” in the (Devices) block.
          II. “Highlight”; the item you want to (enable) this being the “Pointer Device.” Click the (Enable) button, just below. Be sure to (Click) on the “Apply” button, and click OK.
          III. You may need to “Update Drivers?” Click on “Hardware, click “Properties,” click, on Driver.” If the, Update Driver (block) is not “Grayed-out” click “Update Driver”, click (OK), this will ensure that the application take effect.
          Note: Restarting the computer will configure system changes in the computer applications to prevent errors, and to finalize the (Installing / Uninstalling) of programs, and or (Enabling / Disabling) of Hardware.
          Hope this Fix it.
