This is from wikipedia:

When division is explained at the elementary arithmetic level, it is often considered as a description of dividing a set of objects into equal parts. As an example, consider having ten apples, and these apples are to be distributed equally to five people at a table. Each person would receive = 2 apples. Similarly, if there are 10 apples, and only one person at the table, that person would receive = 10 apples.

So for dividing by zero - what is the number of apples that each person receives when 10 apples are evenly distributed amongst 0 people? Certain words can be pinpointed in the question to highlight the problem. The problem with this question is the "when". There is no way to distribute 10 apples amongst 0 people. In mathematical jargon, a set of 10 items cannot be partitioned into 0 subsets. Soone divided by zero equal to infinity, why - ed9f7cc4d52d9a98f859e594a77b31b7.pngs/images/ed9f7cc4d52d9a98f859e594a77b31b7.png" alt="ed9f7cc4d52d9a98f859e594a77b31b7.png" class="h_mi" />, at least in elementary arithmetic, is said to be meaningless, or undefined.

Similar problems occur if we have 0 apples and 0 people, but this time the problem is in the phrase "the number". A partition is possible (of a set with 0 elements into 0 parts), but since the partition has 0 parts, vacuously every set in our partition has a given number of elements, be it 0, 2, 5, or 1000. If there are, say, 5 apples and 2 people, the problem is in "evenly distribute". In any integer partition of a 5-set into 2 parts, one of the parts of the partition will have more elements than the otherone divided by zero equal to infinity, why - ed9f7cc4d52d9a98f859e594a77b31b7.pnge cases, , and , one is asked to consider an impossible situation before deciding what the answer will be, and that is why the operations are undefined in these cases.

To understand division by zero, we must check it with multiplication: multiply the quotient by the divisor to get the original number. However, no number multiplied by zero will produce a product other than zero. To satisfy division by zero, the quotient must be bigger than all other numbers, i.e., infinity. This connection of division by zero to infinity takes us beyond elementary arithmetic (see below).

A recurring theme even at this elementary stage is that for every undefined arithmetic operation, there is a corresponding question that is not well-defined. "How many apples will each person receive under a fair distribution of ten apples amongst three people?" is a question that is not well-defined because there can be no fair distribution of ten apples amongst three people.

There is another way, however, to explain the division: if we want to find out how many people, who are satisfied with half an apple, can we satisfy by dividing up one apple, we divide 1 by 0.5. The answer is 2. Similarly, if we want to know how many people, who are satisfied with nothing, can we satisfy with 1 apple, we divide 1 by 0. The answer is infinite; we can satisfy infinite people, that are satisfied with nothing, with 1 apple.

Clearly, we cannot extend the operation of division based on the elementary combinatorial considerations that first define division, but must construct new number systems.

### Stone and Mulch Calculators

As an example, let's use 500 square feet to be mulched at a
3" depth.
1. First, the depth must be converted to feet. To convert inches to feet, simply divide inches by 12, the number of inches in a foot.

So for our example: 3 inches divided by 12 equals a 0.25 foot depth.
2. Now that we have the depth in feet, we can multiply the depth by the area.

So for our example: 0.25 foot depth times 500 square feet equals 125 cubic feet.
3. If you are calculating 0.5, 2, or 3, cubic foot bags, simply divide 125 cubic feet by the size of the bag.

So for our example: if we are using 2 cubic foot bags, we can divide 125 cubic feet by 2 which equals 62.5 bags.
4. If you are calculating cubic yards, we need to convert 125 cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27. One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet, see the diagram below.

So for our example: 125 cubic feet divided by 27 equals 4.63 cubic yards.

• 1 inch equals 0.08333 feet
• 1.5 inches equals 0.125 feet
• 2 inc

### Use compatible numbers to find two estimate that the quotient is between 1,624 divided by 3

Hi Tammy:
Here's what I would do.
1) 1500 divided by 3 equals 500
that would leave 124
2) 120 divided by 3 equals 40
That leaves 4
3) 4 divided by 3 equals 1
with 1 remaining.
putting the quotients together you get 541
with 1 remaining.
All can be done mentally with no calculator and basic multiplication tables that most school children memorize.

Is this what you were looking for?
Cheerfuls.

### How cani i solve "x divided by 9 and x divided by 9 equals 4

x divided by 9 and 9 divided by 9 equals 4, so x divided by 9 equals half of 4 or 2. 2 times 9 equals 18, so x equals 18.

To check, 18 divided by 9 equals 2. 2 and 2 equals 4.

### I need the EXACT solution for -7 + square root of 61 divided by 2. I have a Ti-30XA calculator and I don't know how to do this.

It is unclear whether your equation is:

a: ((SQRT61) - 7) / 2
or
b: ((SQRT61) / 2) - 7

For a:
Type 61 SQRT.
Subtract 7.
Equals.
Divide by 2.
Equals. (Should be 0.4051248...)

For b:
Type 61 then SQRT.
Then divide by 2.
Equals.
Then subtract 7.
Equals. (Should be -3.094875...)

Good luck.

### When graphing the function (x+6)/(x-7) I'm getting a vertical line showing up on the graph connecting the two curves that shouldn't be there. do I have something turned on that shouldn't be?

The vertical line is called an asymptote, it is not connecting the graph, it means that the function goes to infinity as the function nears the line. In this case the graph goes to infinity and negative infinity as the x nears 7. This is because the function becomes undefined at x = 7 , plug 7 into x and we get 1/0, dividing by zero is undefined. Thus, the calculator puts the vertical asymptote in the graph to symbolize the action of the function nearing infinity.

### What is the answer to 10x minus 3x equals 20 plus 1 equals what

joshua,

Here are the solution steps:

10x minus 3x equals 20 plus 1

10X minus 3X is 7X (right?)
20 plus 1 is 21 (right?)
therefore:

7X = 21

now divide both sides of the equals sign by 7

7X divided by 7 equals 21 divided by 7

7X / 7 = 21/7

### Any number raised to the power of zero gives us answer equal to 1...why???the answer should b according to class 8th 9th

I'm not sure if this is 8th 9th grade level answer, but it is the easiest explanation .

if you have a number x to the power of n divided by the number x to the power of m then that is equal x to the power of (n-m).

x^n/x^m = x^(n-m)

therefore

x^n/x^n= x^(n-n)= x^0 = 1

because every number divided by itself equals 1

### If I've travelled 2082 KL in a 12 month period how much fuel would I have used in an SUV

Depends on how you drive, how long you let it warm up, etc. If it was getting say 20 mpg, it would use about 65 gallons to go 1294 miles (2082KM), Do you know how to check your fuel mileage? When you fill up, zero the trip meter, or write down the miles, next time you fill up, get a receipt with gallons (liters) on it and write down the miles, divide it by the number of gallons, this is miles per gallon. 200 miles divided by 10 gallons equals 20MPG . zero the trip odometer again and next tank you can figure it again. I write the miles on my reciepts so anytime I want I can check. Hope this helps.
