Question about KitchenAid Superba Architect KSCS25INSS Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a KitchenAid KSCS251 side-by-side. The freezer side has seemed to quit working. Can't get it to go below 35 degrees. I shut off the ice-maker and all my food is slowly defrosting. This issue just happened today. The unit was purchased new in '05 and have had no problems with it at all. I've replaced the filter twice since I bought it. What could be the problem and how to I go about fixing it?

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me.

After looking at the unit for awhile, I realized that the entire refrigerator wasn't working.

I pulled it out and removed the back panel. It appears the the compressor is not turning on.

I checked the continuity of power and discovered that the proper AC is getting to the motor controller, but there's nothing getting to the compressor. I unplugged the unit from the wall for a few minutes, then jiggled all the conedtions, the plugged it back in. The compressor kicked on for about 5 sec. then shut down. I'm affraid that it could be a motor controller issue or perhaps a bad relay or electronic issue for the compressor. There is no AC getting to the compressor, at least, not for long.

    What do you think?

As there is no AC to the compressor ,the compressor as no problem. The problem lies with the control board(Electronic control) as the power reaches the board and the out put is NIL.That is the only seems to the problem.Change the board and it will be fine.

    Thank You

My Kitchen Aid KSCS25INSS will defrost the freezer up to 57 degrees sometimes twice a day. I cannot use the ice maker because I end up with a large block of ice after one or two days.

57 degrees is pretty hot. If it occurs on a regular basis day to day, it sounds like a defrost cycle malfunction.
There is a calrod heater imbedded in the evaporator coil behind the panel in the freezer compartment. It comes on approx. 2 times a day. The compressor is shut off and the calrod (which looks a lot like the bake element in an electric range) is turned on. It gets quite hot, but a thermostat mounted on top of the evaporator coil, shuts the heater down when the coil reaches approx 50 degrees. If this thermostat ( often called a limiter ) fails to open in time, the temperature in the freezer coil box can easily reach 100 degrees or more. If so, this could be your problem. Remove the rear panel in the freezer compartment aand locate this small disc thermostat and replace with new.

Fridge and Freezer quit working

If your ice maker has stopped producing ice completely, check these, in this order:

  • It may be turned off. Look for the wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If the wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. If so, try one of these:

    • If your ice maker has a small red plastic lever, lower it to lower the wire.

    • If there's no plastic lever, simply lower the wire.

In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again. Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts! Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary.

  • The ice maker head assembly may have broken parts. Look to see if the gears are broken. Check to see if the small plastic arms that rest against the ice rake are broken. If the ice maker head assembly is modular and you've found broken parts, you can just replace it.

KitchenAid door ice and water dispensers don't work

If  the ice maker has completely stopped producing ice Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

The ice maker is producing ice poorly When an ice maker is producing ice poorly--when it produces just a few cubes or none, or when the cubes are too small--it's usually because of a clogged water line or a defective water inlet valve.

First, check the water line attached to the back of the refrigerator for good water flow. To do that, first turn off the water supply valve. Then remove the water line from the back of the refrigerator. Next, place the water line into a bucket and momentarily turn the water valve back on to test the flow. If the flow is poor, you need to repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water. If the flow is good, you may have to replace the water inlet valve.

Check the disconnect plug for power and good connection. Check the ambient temperature-colder the better but should be below 15 degrees. If the arm is down and all else OK replace the unit. Those IM's are throw away items now.

I would suggest not buying a KitchenAid. I have the same problem with my ice maker. Have had nothing but problems with every KitchenAid product that I have ever owned. I will never purchase another KitchenAid product.

All of there appliances are second rate. That is "The KitchenAid Difference"
