I have a DLink DES-1008D 8 port switch. ! port connects to dsl router/modem and the rest connects to 7 PCs. I have sometimes seen that all the lights on switch is blinking rapidly 1 by 1 or sometime no...

Hi,
Are you using the original power adapter ?

Use only CAT5 UTP fast-Ethernet cables no longer than 80 meters.

Connect just 5 or 6 computers to see if the problem resolves. Sometimes the internal buffer on the switch (the store-forward buffer) gets full, so the switch resets and stop forwarding packets until it get it's buffer cleared.

I hope it will help you.

Greetings

When i get connected to d-link des 1008d switch port the computer will get automatically configured 255.255.0.0 to subnet mask therefore i have class c ip address and i dont have internet connection...

u no need to worry about the subnet mask 255.255.0.0
just do the following connections
  1. connect a utp cable from modem/router to dlink switch.
  2. connect a utp cable from switch to ur pc
Assign ur pc manually with following configuration

ip: 192.168.100.5
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.100.1

and your router with ip: 192.168.100.1 And enable pppoe in ur router.

Thats it you are connected to internet. No need to enable ics etc.

How to link with 16 port switch with 8 port switch

Good question.
To link the new switch, take a short cable from the LAN port on the new Switch and connect it to one of the existing ports on the old or connected switch. it's just a daisychain.
Just keep in mind that the LAN connection on the Last switch must be connected to a PORT on the prior device on the LAN.

Max cable lenght for cat 6e cable

The cable standard provides performance of up to 250 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T / 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T / 1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet). It is expected to suit the 10GBASE-T (10Gigabit Ethernet) standard, although with limitations on length if unshielded Cat 6 cable is used. Category 6 cable can be identified by the printing on the side of the cable sheath.

Cat5e is suitable for 10/100/1000baseT ethernet for 100 meters, when properly installed.
Cat 6 is also good for 10 gig ethernet for 37 meters, but that is pretty short, unless just in a server room.
There is no Cat 6e, but Cat 6A will be good for 10/100/1000/10GbaseT ethernet for 100 meters.
Unshielded Twisted Pair has no ground shield around the wires. It is the standard in the US, where most network standards were defined. There are extensions to the standards to allow for the more common in Europe, Shielded Twisted Pair.
Some Cat-6 cables are too large and may be difficult to attach to 8P8C connectors without a special modular piece and are technically not standard compliant. If components of the various cable standards are intermixed, the performance of the signal path will be limited to that of the lowest category. The maximum allowed length of a Cat-6 cable is 100 meters (330 ft) when used for 10/100/1000baseT and 37 meters (120 ft) when used for 10GbaseT. This applies for UTP cables only. Shielded Cat 6 and Cat 7 cables are capable of 100m.....sodeep

How to solve the lan problem

With only Cat 5 UTP cable segments, the maximum length for any cable segment is 100 meters, make sure that you don't exceed this. Also crossover cables are for switch to switch connections. You must use a straight thru cable from PC to switch port

I have a broadband DSL modem/router in my home office. I also have 2 CAT5e ports there. I want to feed the Internet signal from the router (one of the ports on the back) through a CAT5e point up to my...

Hi Joe,

How are you connecting to the port in the back of your router? if you have crimped a male plug on to some UTP cable then this may be the problem. UTP cable has a solid condutor and needs a different male crimp plug than UTP patch cable, which has stranded conductors.

I suggest you connect the UTP cable between the office and the loft to an RJ45 wall or surface socket in the office, use a terminating tool designed for the make and type of outlet you use, i.e. if using an ADC socket use the ADC termination tool. The sockets are designed for solid cable and have a colour code for you to follow. Then use a factory terminated patch cord between this socket and the router port.

I assume you have terminated the cable from the office onto one of the patch panel ports and want to use a patch cord to patch from this incoming socket to the sockets that are terminated onto the cables going to your other rooms. If you have access to a laptop connect this directly into the router port and ensure you have an internet connection, then plug the patch cord connecting the loft port into the router and take the laptop into the loft and ensure you have a connection at the incoming port on the patch panel. If you get the connnection there then use a factory patch cord to patch to a room you would like a connection in and then take the laptop to that outlet and ensure you have a connection.

If you want to run outlets in multiple rooms without re-patching every time then you will need to have an active switch in your loft and connect the port from the office to this and then patch out of the switch ports to the various room outlets.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Jason

HP Procurve 1700-8 working upto 10m UTP cable only.

It is not a distance limitation of the switch, rather the cabling in the walls and ceiling. If the cable is Cat5 it can be up to 100M, but this can be drastically reduced with things like EM interference from fluorescent lights, kinks in cable and more. The switch auto detects the maximum reliable speed and this interference would cause it to drop to 10MBps. If you don't have a cable certifier (very expensive) you may want to consider simply replacing the cabling run with Cat6 following best installation practices.
