I want to install fresh copy of window xp but when i press any for boot from cd then after loading few files In window installion first setup system become halted and does not proceed. i cannot install fresh copy of window. Please help me in this regard. Note: Pre-installed window xp is working well. I ALSO CHANGE SYSTEM RAM.

Press either delete or f2 during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart if you have done this you might have a faulty lead
One bad/faulty lead can cause a computer with lots of problems
replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?

How to tackle "missing NTLDR file" error
This happens due to viruses. They delete the NTLDR file.
Do you have the original XP CD? Then insert it and boot from the CD. (If it doesn't boot from the CD, tell us and we will explain how to set it in BIOS).
After a while it will ask you whether to Setup XP (Enter) or Repair an existing Windows installation (R). Press Enter here (Don't worry, I know what I am talking about).
Press F8 to accept the Licence Agreement.
(*** In the following screen you have to press 'R'. IF YOU DON'T SEE A TEXT SCREEN BUT THE SETUP STARTS TO RUN, TAKE OUT THE CD IMMEDIATELY AND RESTART THE COMPUTER. ***) It will tell you you have an existing Windows installation in <C:> drive. Unable to start Windows
Before we start, always check there are no USB devices/drives attached, or any discs in the cd/dvd drive.
If there are, remove them and try to boot....
Still no windows?......Read on

Depending whether you have a recovery disc, or a full version of windows, you still may be able to repair your installation.
If you have a recovery disc, and you can use it, you will restore your computer to factory fresh state, you will loose all your files/programs. (If you wish to do this you may want to save your files, to do this follow the "LIVE" linux install option (bottom of page)
If you have a windows disc (the same copy as you have installed on your computer), try this....BASED ON WINDOWS XP, JUST GOOGLE WINDOWS REAPAIR INSTALLATION + VISTA OR WINDOWS 7 FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON THOSE OS'S
  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
    Windows XP to run on your computer:

    To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

    To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

    To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
  3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. If repair is available.....
  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact
IF the repair option is not available, and you continue to load windows, you will loose everything.

LIVE LINUX INSTALL (google "live linux distro")
IF you want to save files/documents before a recovery or clean windows install, you can download various " LIVE" Linux distrabutions.
You Burn these to a cd as a bootable ISO file ( imgburn is a free burning program that will enable you to make bootable ISO discs).
Some linux distrabutions have built in recovery tools/virus scanners.
Once you have recovered your important files, you can either carry on with the windows recovery, clean install.... OR...you may find that you like LInux, if so you can fully install the linux OS and if its not what you want, Install Windows back in.

After installation dont forget .......
1.Download and install your security programs (Anti-virus/Anti-malware)
2. download drivers from your manufacturers support page
3. turn automatic updates on

NOTE............When you are up and running, and want to transfer any saved files you may have recovered..SCAN THEM with your Anti-virus BEFORE you put them onto your nice clean PC.

Good day. I suggest for you to reinstall windows and use the repair options. Usually software encounter errors or some files might get corrupted causing your computer not to boot up properly. The repair option in Windows XP will help you to fix those issue. here are the steps to follow:

1. Rule out hardware issues. Windows Repair will only fix software problems. Hardware issues can also cause boot problems (i.e. bad hard drive, memory, CPU, or power supply).

2. Backup. It's always a good idea to backup your important data before making changes to Windows XP. Relax, if you follow these instructions your data will be perfectly safe.

3. Boot from your Windows XP CD. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

4. A blue screen will appear and begin loading Windows XP Setup from the CD.

5. When completed loading files, you will be presented with the following "Windows Setup" screen, and your first option. Select "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER". DO NOT select Recovery Console.

6. Then press F8 to continue

7. Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

8. Then just choose repair option to repair your Windows Xp

9 Then it should work. If iin any case that will not solve the issue, you might try to install fresh copy on Windows Xp

    you will be asked to press any key to boot from CD, so do just that.

    Step 3: System repair steps

    simply let the CD load without pressing F6.

    Once completed, you will be confronted with "Windows Setup". You will be asked to setup up Windows, or repair Windows with the recovery console. Choose the FIRST option, NOT recovery console.
Choose F8 to continue.
  • Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

    If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may happen if the data or partition on your drive is too corrupted.

That should be it. Windows XP will appear to be installing itself for the first time, but it will retain all of your data and settings. Just follow the prompts

If you don't have an option to repair, try this:

4. Type bootcfg
5. This should fix any boot.ini errors causing setup not to see the XP installation.
6. Try the repair install again.

If the Repair is still not an option, try the following:

1. Boot with XP CD.
2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.
3. Login to the Recovery Console using your Admin password if needed.
4. If the CD letter is K: give these commands

* copy K:\i386\ntldr C:\
* copy K:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\

While still in the Recovery Console, try this as well:

1. Type: attrib -h -r -s C:\boot.ini del C:\boot.ini
2. Type: BootCfg /Rebuild
3. Now Restart and try the Repair Install again.

Don't worry it is very easy to fix it.
Let's get started!

Step 4: A blue screen will appear and begin loading Windows XP Setup from the CD.

Note: RAID/SCSI/Unsupported UDMA users:
You will be prompted to "press F6 to install any third party SCSI or RAID drivers". Most users will not have to press F6, but if you are running RAID, SCSI or unsupported UDMA controllers, then you will have to have your controller drivers on a floppy disk. If you are unsure whether you have RAID/SCSI, then simply let the CD load without pressing F6.

When completed loading files, you will be presented with the following "Windows Setup" screen, and your first option. Select "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER". DO NOT select Recovery Console.

Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may happen if the data or partition on your drive is too corrupted.

Note: If you install a fresh copy, all data on that partition will be lost!

Your almost finished! Windows XP will appear to be installing itself for the first time, but it will retain all of your data and settings. Just follow the prompts, and have your CD-KEY ready if needed.

Do you have more than one system, or lost your CD-KEY? Visit the keyfinder page to retrieve your CD-KEY.

Update: Due to the proliferation of the Blaster and Welchia Worm/Virus be aware that a Repair Install will leave your system vulnerable. You can get infected within seconds. Do not go on line until you have enabled XP's firewall first.

Remember to run Windows Update! (install critical updates first)

Configuring Your Computer to Boot from CD

Many computers are not configured to boot from the CDROM. If you cannot boot from the CDROM, this is probably due to the boot order of your devices being incorrect. You can change this in the BIOS.

You enter the BIOS from the first screen you see when you turn your computer on. To enter your BIOS, most users here will press the DEL key.

Most Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, Sony & HP systems will press F2.

Compaq users will usually have to press F10.

IBM typically uses F1 or F2.

Other brands may have different keys to press to enter setup, F1, F2, Del, Tab and CTRL+S. If possible see the manual for your computer or motherboard. Also, the BIOS will usually display which button to press to "enter setup" during POST (if it flashes by too fast, press the Pause key).

When you enter the BIOS setup, you need to change the boot order. The CDROM should be setup before the Hard Drive. Each BIOS is different, but here is an example:

I have 2 drives C:\ and D:\ Im trying to reinstall my windows but my c drive would not allow me to do so. Instead I could only do so on D:\ Now I have three options during bootup: c:\Windows, D:\Windows...
Hi.

Insert the xp CD in the drive.
Where it asks you to choose a location to install xp, just delete both the partition. (default button D)
Then make two fresh partition and install xp in the first one (that is C).

This will solve your problem.

Try to format my hard drive it will not format. or at least i cannot find anything that has.. all it will do is copy over the old windows but i know there is a better way to clear everything off!
go into the control panel. click administrative tools. open computer management. click the tab called disk management. make sure the drive you want to format isnt the system drive. (it wont let you format while running) and format the drive from there. you can also choose the drive letter you want to format to. very useful if you are a neat person. (C: MAIN, D: documents, M: music, Z: dvd writer, V: virtual memory.........)
