Hello, our fridge has stopped working, the fan and motor are still running but the unit wont get cold anymore.I think it might be a freon problem but I cant be sure. The motor and fan are running constant

Your right! A freon leakage system problem cause no cold anymore.
But a temp control must be check.
A defective temp control will also cause no cold of the freezer.
The same also if compressor motor is defective even though it is running.
Call a service technician to verify the trouble of your fridge.
I hope I give you idea regarding your fridge problem.

How any fridge keep things cool inside it

are you asking the basics of refrigeration? if so here it is. refrigeration is the absence of heat. air inside the fridge is blown across cold coils. the freon inside those coils pick up or remove the heat from the air. the freon then takes this heat to the coils that are on the back of the fridge or under the fridge to get rid of it so it can pick up more heat inside he fridge and the process starts all over again. This is why it is so important to keep the outside coils clean. the outside coils have to get rid of the heat.
freon can not pick up heat inside the fridge if it can not get rid of the heat outside of the fridge.
Your homes air conditioning works the same way and so does any window air conditioners.
hope this is what you were asking for.

My fridge is about 9 yrs. old, and I'm having problems keeping things cold all the time. It works fine for awhile and then it's like someone has unplugged it. The contents are not cold anymore, but after...

Multiple things can cause this. It could be the defrost timer is malfunctioning causing long defrost cycles. could be low on freon and freezing up causing a blockage of air flow thus a warmer than normal box. Compressor may have a start component issue where it is not coming on as designed or possibly overheating. a dirty condenser coil can also cause this issue. Good luck and hope this points you in a direction.

Fridge and freezer not keeping things cold anymore, first it was the fezzer than yesterday it eads the fridge everything defrosting

Two possibilities either your sealed system has a leak and you are running out of freon, or your compressor relay is shutting the compressor off.  If it is the freon leaking your compressor will run constantly. If it is the relay you will hear a clicking sound and the compressor kicks on and off every couple of minutes.  If this is the case get a start capacitor from a parts store.  To tell which is start and run on your compressor get a meter.  The terminal standing on its own is common.  The one with less resistance is the run coil, and the other one is the start coil

Fridge and freezer not getting cold

If it was layed down to move and not let sit for a while before using it again it would not work. Somtimes leaving in off and let it settle will straighten it out but not all time. The oil in the compressor get into the cooling lines and blockes the freon. Other than that, check the condenser coil which are near the compressor. They should be warm when the compressor is runnin. If they are not warm there is a compressor or freon problem.

IF THE COMPRESSOR IS COMING ON AND OFF IN A MATTER OF SECONDS, YOU MAY HAVE A BAD START DEVICE(RELAY) ON THE COMPRESSOR. IF THE COMPRESSOR RUNS FOR FIVE MINUTES OR MORE, CHECK THE FAN NEAR THE COMPRESSOR AND THE COILS
UNDER THE REFRIGERATOR. IF THINGS SEEM EXTREMELY
HOT, CLEAN THE COILS AND MAKE SURE THE FAN IS RUNNING. IF IT IS ALL O.K. YOU MAY HAVE A LEAK IN THE SEALED SYSTEM( TUBING WHERE THE FREON FLOWS).
THAT WOULD REQUIRE A CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN LICENSED TO HANDLE FREON TO MAKE REPAIRS.

You might have to have a repairman check the charge of freon in the system.
