Printer is a few years old, and has never, to my knowledge, been serviced. Now it is printing a page, but the image from the previous page printed transfers to the next. This has become progressively worse and is now to the point that the documents printed are unreadable.

Regarding the Lex1 cartridge's no printing/severe fade (or similar) during printing, my answers are provided below:
poor print quality problem (degraded image quality) you are observing, we
suggest you first visit the "Print Quality" page of the "General
Information" section of the Inkjet 411 website and follow the suggestions
Cartridge & Printer maintenance should also be evaluated - ensure both ink
cartridges and flexible driver contact cables (where the cartridge interfaces
to the carriage inside the printer) are thoroughly clean: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1519
on North American ink refill services (for Lexmark 1, 2 and 3 ink cartridges) at a major retailer near you (should you
wish to save ~50% on ink costs), general printing problem resolutions or advanced
Lexmark printer diagnosis procedures (advanced cartridge diagnostic tests/cartridge error
bypass & printer reset methods, etc.), please visit Inkjet411: http://www.inkjet411.com
It could be due to the refilled cartridge you are inserting in the printer. Refilled cartridges tend to degrade in print quality and cartridge performance.
You can try to clean the cartridge nozzles. On the printer operator panel, on Copy mode, press the Menu button > Tools > Maintenance > Clean Cartridges. Your printer will then print a test page forcing ink through the cartridge nozzles and clean them.
Try to print your document again to verify that the print quality has improved.
If that doesn't help, I would suggest you replace your refilled cartridges with new genuine Lexmark cartridges.
Perhaps this article on 900 Errors on a Lexmark C752, C760, or C762 will help. Just click on this link: http://bit.ly/c2xr1t. There are embedded links on the page for additional info. If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact Lexmark technical support or your authorized service provider.
If you're using a Macintosh, you should be able to check supplies by going to System Preferences > Print and Fax > Options and Supplies > Supplies Level. If you're using Windows operating system, there's no other way to check it unless the printer is on the network. It can be seen by accessing the embedded web server(EWS) page. To access EWS, go to Control Panel > Printers/ Printers and Faxes. You should see something like this:
You need to look for the IP address of the printer. On the image, it's the one that says http://10.194.200.217. After getting the IP address, open internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and type the IP address in the address bar as shown:
After typing the IP address in the address bar and hitting "Enter" on the keyboard, you should see the EWS page with the supplies level. Otherwise you need to have OP panel serviced to check supplies. Hope this helps. If you need more assistance, leave a comment and I'll get back to it. Thanks.
lexmark basically has said that if this error doesnt clear by powering off the machine and powering it back on again then it will need to have a service call. this error means there is a problem with the itu belt assembly.below is what they say. the steps were to pwoer it off and back on again using a grounded wall socket
This error normally requires a service call. However, certain rare occurrences, such as a stray static discharge in the vicinity of the printer or a power fluctuation, can cause a false 103 ITU error message to appear. In these cases, the error is only temporary and can be easily resolved without service. Follow the steps in the table. StepAction1 Power the printer off, wait ten seconds, and then power the printer back on. Did the error message return?
Yes: Continue to step 2 No: Print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly.
2 If possible, connect the printer's power cord directly into a grounded wall outlet. In rare instances, a surge protector or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can generate false error messages. Did the error message return?
Yes: Continue to Contacting Lexmark below. No: Print a test page. If the page prints, the printer is functioning correctly.
if you have no lights on the display, the possibility of a bad power supply is good, bring it to any of the computer store with a service or a computer repair shop, have them check it.
if you have voltmeter, test the output from the low voltage transformer that goes into the printer against the rating on the transformer.
Sounds like the jets may be clogged. You may have to run multiple times till they are good. Print a test after each clean and see if that helps.
You can use the operator panel or the Lexmark X5100 Series Solution
