Two things you can do. 1- Remove the brush as if you were going to change the drive belt for it. Clean the brush as best you can and spray some WD40 on the hard rubber/plastic pieces at both ends of the brush. Rotate the pieces to work the WD40 into the space between the pieces and the brush axle. 2- If you have one available, as long as the brush is off, change the belt.
This should get your unit back in operation. If you find this solution helpful, I would appreciate a Thumbs Up from you. Thank you. Paul

Is the brush just stopping its motion, or is the motor shutting down from time to time?

  • pwillitz Oct 09, 2010

    Lets try another approach.
If you look at the manual at this URL:http://media.dyson.com/downloads/us/floo...
it says on page 7 that the brush will stop working automatically when you go from carpeting to thin rugs or bare wood floors.
I was not aware of this, as I do not own one of these units.
Is it possible that you are making this transition when the brush is stopping?

The brush is stopping in motion the motor continues to run, the belt is fine

I am glad you were able to (I assume) solve the problem or get to the bottom of it.

Something must be blocking the rotation of the brushes. It has no chance to start rotation as it is immediately stopped by something.

My rotating brushes have stopped rotating

Almost certainly you have broken a drive belt. It is not a big deal though just turn it upside down and remove the base plate you should be able to access the belt from there. You should be able to get a belt pretty easy from an online retailer like vacuumspot

THis is not a self-propelled vacuum. The problem is that the brushes are no longer rotating on their own. They only 'brush and lift carpet' when I pull backward. I have ahd the vacuum for about 1 year. ...

Sounds like you need to take the brushes off the unit and clean the end pieces that the brushes rotate around. Not uncommon that they get dirty and stop rotating. Clean all debris and add a little WD40 on the end of the bush rods that the brush spins around. Make sure the belt is on properly.

Floor level brush stopped rotating after it caught

Look at the bottom and check a thread of carpet isn't wrapped around the brush, if so try pulling it off or carefully cutting it off. You'll probably see a collection of fluff etc above the brush that's stopping it from sucking up, pull this out, or it just may be that cause the brush isn't working its not picking up.

The brush roll will only spin when your handle is not in the locked upright position, once the handle goes upright - the brushroll de-activates

The brushes stopped turning. I cleaned the filter

Can you rotate the brushes manually (grab some of the yellow bristles and rotate the brushes). If they are not jammed, then your air fan drive is clogged or broken. Air must pass through the fan to spin the brushes... so confirm air flow by powering the machine on and feeling for decent air flow. Clear any obstructions that my restrict air flow....

If the motor on the power brush is running the belt is bad, if the motor on the power brush only runs when you push the overload, the overload is bad.

Brushes do not rotate

Sounds as though your drive belt has come off. Or you have an object stopping the brushes from rotating.
