Question about GE Heating & Cooling
To get super heat you need to check the temperature of the evaporator where the refrigerant is exiting. It will travel to the compressor once it has absorbed heat from the indoor air flowing over it. The refrigerant R-22 will change states from a liquid to a vapor gas at 40 degrees. the air in the house is drawn across this indor coil filled with 40 degree refrigerant and it will start to absorb heat from that air. Super heat is considered to be any heat gain in the refrigerant after the change of state from a liquid to a vapor. SO.....at 40degrees at the evaporator coil where the refrigerant exits the coils all the way to where the tubeing enters the compressor where the temp is maybe 55degrees. This is Superheat and it would be called 15 degrees of superheat. That is how much heat was gained in the refrigerant after it had flashed to a vapor in the evaporator and then passed through the suction line which enters the compressor. Remember the one constant....R-22 boils at 40 degrees and changes from a liquid to a vapor! No matter what this happens so any temp gained over 40 is considered superheat! 10 to 13 degrees of superheat is considered optimal on most units.
