Question about Heating & Cooling

I have a charmglow natural gas heater, model PF 06 YSLF. The pilot lights without problem. However when you turn the control knob to a higher temperature range the pilot goes out with a click just as the gas begins to enter the main burner. If I light the pilot and light the burner with a match and let it burn a few minutes I can increase or decreases the temperature range and the pilot will stay on without problem. Let the burner cool down and the pilot will go out when you turn the knob to get the burner to come on. Any suggestions?

How do i light the pilot?


Turn the Gas Control Knob inside the heater compartment from OFF to PILOT. Push in the knob and hold it, at the sametime push the ignitor button (will probably be a Red button). Once the pilot lights, continue to hold the Control Knob down for one minute. Then ease off of it. If the pilot stays lit, turn the Control Knob to the ON position. The burner should light, if the Thermostat is set higher than the ambient temperature in the house. If the Ignitor button doesn't work, you can match light the pilot. Just be careful and follow the instructions above, once it's lit.

How di i light the pilot light


Be sure that the gas line to the heater is ON.

Looking at the Control Knob on top of the heater, you note that he knob has 3- positions: OFF, Pilot, ON.

Turn the control knob to the Pilot position and push down on it. If it does not go all the way in and your do not feel strong pressure pushing back at you, it is not directly in the pilot position. (Reposition the knob slightly and try again). Once You're sure the knob is directly in the pilot position and the knob is depressed, continue to hold it in and press the Ignitor button next to it. You will hear a loud click. If possible, watch the pilot assembly inside the heater when you do this. That way you can see if the pilot lit the first time. If not repeat, pushing the ignitor.

If the gas line had been turned off to the heater, the pilot may not light the first couple of tries, due to air being in the gas line. If that is the case, hold the control knob in until you smell gas, let off, wait 5 minutes and repeat the lighting sequence.

Once the pilot does light, continue to hold the control knob in for 1 minute. This will allow the Thermocouple to heat up completely. Ease off the control knob and the pilot should remain lit. If it does, turn the control knob to ON and the burner will light.

Now you're ready to set the temperature or comfort level. You do this by raising or lowering the flame height. The higher the flames, the more heat it puts out. The lower the flames, the less heat it puts out. The stripe on the knob represents the flame heights - Narrow stripe, lowest setting, widest strip, highest setting. Or your specific model may simply say Low, Medium, High.

I have a Charmglow patio heater. I have taken it apart and cleaned all openings where the gas comes out, but the flame still goes out after 7-8 minutes. It lights fine but will not stay lit for more than...


From what you have described, it sounds like the Thermocouple is going bad and needs to be replaced. As far as not being able to relight the pilot right away is concerned ... that's a safety feature. The control has to reset itself, before you can relight it, if the pilot goes out on it's on. As it did in your care. It usually takes about 2 - 3 minutes for the control valve to reset itself.

As far as replacing the Thermocouple is concerned, it's somewhat of a specialty item, because of it being in a tall patio heater. However, armed with the Model # of your Charmglow Patio Heater, you can probably purchase one from the manufacturer, Chamglow.

I have a Sterling garage furnace,pilot is on ,but main burner will not light.


Be sure you turned the Control knob from Pilot to ON. Without doing that the heater will not turn. If that's not the problem, the Thermopile may need replacing. Also, check the volume of gas at the heater. It should be a minimum of 5 to 7 water column inches. If it has a wall thermostat, be sure the wires are correctly installed at the heater and the wall thermostat and the it's turned up higher than the ambient air temperature in the garage. If this is an older installation, be sure the exhaust vent piping is not blocked.

Can't re-light the pilot light

turn the knob on very slowly just enough to fire up the heater. once it is fired up slowly adjust it.

Well, I just went out this morning and worked on the heater after it would not light last night. Turns out that a spider or moth set up camp in the pilot light intake housing and plugged up the two small mixer holes that pull in air for the pilot light. This would explain the 'yellow-flame'. I took a punch awl and some compressed air and cleaned out the hole, then re-installed the cover and knob. Lastly, I turned and depressed the knob and the pilot light ignited almost instantly, stayed on when I let the knob up, and the heater turned on normally after that. Good luck, I hope this helps.
