What is the network key? some times called the WEP key or the WPA key..

What is a WEP key

Wired equivalent Privacy or WEP for short is a special code used ensures that wireless networks are secure. Wireless networks are ways of broadcasting information using radios waves, and are often used in conjunction with a connection to the internet, enabling devices to connect to the internet without the need for wires. In the case of most homes and business the wireless network is created through use of a single router. This is generally a small box which is plugged into the phone/cable line. This router will thus act as the means of converting internet signals through a wire into wireless signals to be read by a laptop.

By making a network secure, it is possible to restrict who accesses it. This can be done for several reasons. Firstly, if a network isn't secure someone may be able to intercept the information travelling between the router and the laptop, handheld gaming device etc. This is obviously a big deal if entering in personal or financial details to online websites-in theory someone could steal all this information if it is transmitted over an unsecured network. The second main reason for wishing to secure a network is to restrict access to the network to only those devices which are authorised to. Since there is a cost for connecting to the internet, and sometimes charges for the amount it is used, it is in the interest of the person paying the bills to ensure that no unauthorised people use the connection.

WEP security is thus used to ensure the network is a secure network. Whilst there have since been other forms of encryption which are more secure than WEP, WEP is probably still the most widely used of encryption, and the one to which most devices have compatibility, including the Sony PSP and many laptops.
How do I find my WEP key?

There are two ways of finding a WEP key. The first way is to look on the router itself and on any packaging that came with it when purchased; there may be information on here. The second way is slightly more complex and so for ease of use this has been displayed in numbered stages. This has been tailored for using a Linksys router, and so there may be slight differences in the words if using a different router such as a Belkin.

Steps to find a WEP key:

1. Open a browser (the program used to access the internet). The following process worked for myself when using the Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera browsers, although I am unsure whether it will work for other browsers (eg Chrome, Safari etc).

2. Type the following into the address bar of the browser. If using a Linksys router type in "192.168.1.1" and if using a Belkin router type "192.168.2.1". The address bar is the area where webpages are typed. It is important when typing in that there is NO http://www. before the numbers.

3. If all has gone well this should open a page that either says Linksys or Belkin.

3. There may be the need to login. When using a Linksys if you don't know what the username and password are it may still be the factory settings, and so enter in "admin" for the username and "password" for the password. If using a Belkin router, the factory settings often come with no password, so just click submit without typing in a password.

4. Click on a) "Wireless" or b) "settings".

5. Click on a) "Wireless security" or b) "wireless settings".

6. There should be a page with a WEP key listed.

7. Write it down/copy and use as you wish!

The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. Suddenly today after working for a couple of years all the lights are on solid and my wireless laptops can not find the router


To connect to your wireless network using Vista's WLAN Autoconfig, follow these steps:
Step 1:
Right-click this icon 5449-001.png at the bottom-right corner of the screen and select Connect to a network.

Select your Wireless Network Name or SSID then click Connect.

If the wireless network name or your SSID is not listed, the SSID Broadcast on the router might be disabled. For instructions on how to connect to the wireless network with the SSID broadcast being disabled, click here.

NOTE: Make sure Display characters is checked, to display the WEP/WPA key used by the router. You can get the passphrase or network key from the encryption that has been generated (if using WEP network security) from the router's web-based setup page. If you're using WPA network security, the network key is the key for passphrase.

Make sure you enter the wireless network's WEP or WPA key not the Passphrase.

It is also possible to make a wireless connection even if the wireless security is disabled on your router. If you plan to have a wireless network, you should set it up so that only people you choose can access it. Here are a few options for wireless network security.

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
WEP is a widely used network security method. When you enable WEP, you set up a network security key. This key encrypts the information that one computer sends to another computer across your network. The receiving computer needs the key to decode the information so that it's difficult for someone on another computer to get onto your network and access files without your permission.

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)
WPA was created to improve the security of WEP. Like WEP, WPA encrypts information, but it also checks to make sure that the network security key has not been modified. WPA also authenticates users to help ensure that only authorized people can access the network. If your networking hardware works with both WEP and WPA security, we recommend that you use WPA.

There are two types of WPA authentication: WPA and WPA2. WPA is designed to work with all wireless network adapters, but it might not work with older routers or access points. WPA2 is more secure than WPA, but it will not work with some older network adapters. WPA is designed to be used with an 802.1X authentication server, which distributes different keys to each user. This is referred to as WPA-Enterprise or WPA2-Enterprise. It can also be used in a pre-shared key (PSK) mode, where every user is given the same passphrase. This is referred to as WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal.

802.1X authentication
802.1X authentication can help enhance security for 802.11 wireless networks and wired Ethernet networks. 802.1X uses an authentication server to validate users and provide network access. On wireless networks, 802.1X can work with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) keys. This type of authentication is typically used when connecting to a workplace network.

If you have a wireless network, there are some additional security precautions that you should take.

Use a network security key
If you have a wireless network, you should set up a network security key, which turns on encryption. With encryption, people can't connect to your network without the security key. Also, any information that is sent across your network is encrypted so that only computers that have the key to decrypt the information can read it. This can help avert attempts to access your network and files without your permission. Common wireless network encryption methods are Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA-2.

Change the default administrator name and password on your router or access point
If you have a router or access point, you probably used a default name and password to set up the equipment. Most manufacturers use the same default name and password for all of their equipment, which someone could use to access your router or access point without you knowing it. To avoid that risk, change the default administrator user name and password for your router. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the name and password.

Change the default SSID
Routers and access points use a wireless network name called a service set identifier (SSID). Most manufacturers use the same SSID for all of their routers and access points. We recommend that you change the default SSID to keep your wireless network from overlapping with other wireless networks that might be using the default SSID. It makes it easier for you to identify which wireless network is yours, if there is more than one nearby, because the SSID is typically shown in the list of available networks. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the default SSID.

Position your router or access point carefully
Wireless signals can transmit a few hundred feet, so the signal from your network could be broadcast outside of your home. You can help limit the area that your wireless signal reaches by positioning your router or access point close to the center of your home rather than near an outside wall or window.

Is the PIN on the bottom of the router the same as the WEP or WPA?


WEP or WPA are the types of wireless security. If your wireless network is secured then there will be a password on the network that is called as wireless network key or passphrase ( WEP or WPA key ). PIN number is different than WEP or WPA.
To check the wireless network key ( WEP / WPA) you will need to access the router settings page.
On that page , you will find all the settings of the router.

If you select WPA security mode then you can not add the network manually.
I think the OS on your computer is windows XP.
You can connect to the netwoek using the windws utility.
If you select WEP, then you can add the network manually.

How do I put an encryption on my linksys router?


Securing your wireless network is a simple process, which generally does not require a lot of time. This can be done by:
  • Enabling WEP or WPA on the Router
  • Enabling Wireless MAC filter on the Router
  • Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router

Enabling WEP on the Router
Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP) is a type of wirelesssecurity which does not change. It provides comparable confidentialityto a traditional wired network. There are two types of WEP you canchoose from:

Here are the diffenent types of Security Settings possible with a wireless router: (how to set this depends on the brand of router)

Limited connectivity


Hi Duneider!
It's normal that your computers will not connect after you enable a wireless security (WEP/WPA). You are getting a limited or no connectivity message because the wireless computers are not connected to the network using the network key or the password that you have used to setup WEP or WPA. There is no need in hard conding the IP address, all you need to do is reconnect to the wireless network using the WEP or WPA Key. If you will type the correct WEP or WPA Key, it will connect and automatically get the IP address again from your router.

The WEP or WPA is the password to get onto the network. Think of the router as the doorman. The printer needs to get into the club so it needs the password otherwise it can't get access.

The WEP key and WPA passphrase are obtained from the wireless router or access point using the embedded web server on the router. See the documentation provided with your router to see how to access this information. Some routers provide more than one WEP key. Use the first WEP key if this is the case.
