-   same problem with my Inspiron 8100. Screen turned black for couple of secs. occasionally for few months, then completely out few days ago. Rebooting would turn it back on, with a light reddish tinge in the lower left corner, and it would go out again within 10 minutes. One repairman said that it was the CCFL and not the inverter and would fix it for $130.
I'm using an external monitor for now, as an extension of the notebook screen; and have to drag windows from the notebook to the ext. monitor, a rather inconvenient process. In Windows xp, is there any way that I can make the ext monitor identical to the notebook screen, or use the ext mon as the primary mon?

I have done it for 6 bucks. if your adept with a screwdriver, you can take the panel apart and look for the heavy lines that go from the inverer (small long PCB that is usually between the hinges or on the side of the top cover) and follow them up to the top of the white screen plastic backing. peel silver tape off and lift up flap and youll see the long CF tube, very thin, like 2.5mm and as long as the screen is wide. Looks like a tiny fluorescent bulb. Remove carefully, measure the length and diameter of the tube in mm eg. 283/2.5mm and look up that bulb up on internet under CCF cold cathode fluorescent. they run about 5 bucks plus shipping. Youll need to solder the wires back on but that is easy for someone to do if you are not good with that. Just touch ends with hot iron and they will come off, put on the same way. All is not lost. If that doesnt solve problem, the inverter is bad and can be replaced easier than the tube as it just unplugs. Get model number off inverter and look up on Ebay or google, they run about 10.00 used. Bad inverter or lamp will still show an image with a flashlight held up to the screen.
it sounds like you have already done the 'quick fix'. it sounds like the 'backlight' on the unit has gone out, and to replace one of those if the unit isn't under warranty is pretty expensive. it starts around 100 bucks and goes up from there. i have seen one be as expensive as 500 bucks including labor.
