2200 Screen Barely Visible

The screen went dark one day. I have a CRT Monitor hooked up and those images are fine. Any do it yourself quick fix options out there?

same problem with my Inspiron 8100. Screen turned black for couple of secs. occasionally for few months, then completely out few days ago. Rebooting would turn it back on, with a light reddish tinge in the lower left corner, and it would go out again within 10 minutes. One repairman said that it was the CCFL and not the inverter and would fix it for $130.

I'm using an external monitor for now, as an extension of the notebook screen; and have to drag windows from the notebook to the ext. monitor, a rather inconvenient process. In Windows xp, is there any way that I can make the ext monitor identical to the notebook screen, or use the ext mon as the primary mon?

The most of the cost will be in labor; there are several sources for the lamps:

I have done it for 6 bucks. if your adept with a screwdriver, you can take the panel apart and look for the heavy lines that go from the inverer (small long PCB that is usually between the hinges or on the side of the top cover) and follow them up to the top of the white screen plastic backing. peel silver tape off and lift up flap and youll see the long CF tube, very thin, like 2.5mm and as long as the screen is wide. Looks like a tiny fluorescent bulb. Remove carefully, measure the length and diameter of the tube in mm eg. 283/2.5mm and look up that bulb up on internet under CCF cold cathode fluorescent. they run about 5 bucks plus shipping. Youll need to solder the wires back on but that is easy for someone to do if you are not good with that. Just touch ends with hot iron and they will come off, put on the same way. All is not lost. If that doesnt solve problem, the inverter is bad and can be replaced easier than the tube as it just unplugs. Get model number off inverter and look up on Ebay or google, they run about 10.00 used. Bad inverter or lamp will still show an image with a flashlight held up to the screen.

It sounds like you have already done the 'quick fix'. it sounds like the 'backlight' on the unit has gone out, and to replace one of those if the unit isn't under warranty is pretty expensive. it starts around 100 bucks and goes up from there. i have seen one be as expensive as 500 bucks including labor.

My laptop screen went very dark, I can barely make out whats on the screen but I know its working. What can I do to fix this situation on my gateway p-6860fx pc notebook?

Hi josue fernan...
You need to see if your laptop lcd screen is faulty and/or the lcd inverer is faulty.
1....Test the lcd screen:
Hook your laptop to an outside monitor and then start your laptop normally...if the picture on the external monitor is good, then your lcd screen is bad.
2....Backlight Faulty: If the monitor is still as dark like your lcd screen on the laptop then it could be the backlight that is faulty.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up

Compaq presario cq61 screen went dark but can still see window faintly through the dark sreen.

Look at the LCD screen very closely and check if you can see a faint image on the screen. It's possible that the LCD lid close switch stuck in the "closed" position and the back-light stays off even when you open the LCD screen or turn on the laptop. The switch turns off the back-light when you close the LCD display to save the laptop battery power.

If no luck, try to remove battery and drain the power, then replace battery and turn on.

If that didn't fix it then there are 3 things that could have gone wrong:

1. Video cable connection from inverter to LCD got loose. To check this, follow instructions from step 3 on how to open the LCD and check if cable is fitted properly.

2. The video inverter is faulty
The screen inverter failure is very similar to the back-light lamp failure. In both cases the screen gets very dark and the image on the screen becomes very faint, barely visible under a bright light. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. You can replace this otherwise - you can find the inverter under the screen, follow the procedure described at point 3 to open up the screen.

3. The LCD monitor is faulty
If it works on an external monitor most likely the LCD is faulty and needs replacement. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. If not, you can do it yourself, it's pretty easy. Remove the rubber covers on the side of the screen, unscrew the screws take the plastic cover off, disconnect the video inverter and put in the new LCD after you connect the video inverter to it.

No display on monitor

If the laptop acts as it would start and there's just no image, look at the LCD screen very closely and check if you can see a faint image on the screen. Blank screen HP DV1000 I can get video on an external monitor though

Your laptop may have video options:
* only internal LCD screen
* only external monitor (leaving your screen "dark")
* both screens.

Try toggling through the above 3 options.

After that, there's no part in the LCD screen that you can repair, by yourself.

So, if the computer is still under warranty, contact HP to exercise the warranty.

Otherwise, take the printer to a qualified technician, for proper trouble-shooting & repair.

VERY Dim screen after a drop

Have you tested it with an external monitor?

I would say you either have a damaged inverter board or screen baclight lamp. Usually the inverter board fails in one of the following ways:

1. When you turn on the laptop, the screen lights up for a short period of time and then goes dark. You still can see an image but it is very dark, almost invisible and definitely not usable. When you restart the laptop, the screen lights up and then goes dark again. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
2. Your laptop turns on but the screen remains dark all the time. You still can see a very dim image outline. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
3. The laptop screen works fine for hours or even days, but sometimes it goes very dark as it mentioned above. When you restart the laptop, the screen works fine again.

Inverter failure symptoms are very similar to backlight lamp failure symptoms and in most cases you cannot tell which one is causing the problem until you replace either the inverter board or the backlight lamp. From my personal experience, inverter boards fail more often than backlight lamps. If you have to guess, replace the inverter first.

Barely able to see screen.

Your screen or the inverter underneath it which controls the power to the screen is bad.

Dark Screen

The back light is bad in your monitor. This is the light source that gives light to the image on your screen so that you can see it. This is a common thing to go wrong with a laptop. You can take it to someone to be repaired or if you are handy you can buy the part and replace it yourself.

Compaq presario 2200 screen stay dark

sounds like the inverter has gone, the only way to test this is to remove the laptop lid, remove the bezel (front plastic cover) please take care not to crack or splitt the plastics, then get an electical tester and test the inverter coil to make sure a current runs through it, if it doesn't its the coil, if it does you need a new inverter, the coil is located under the plastic sheath

good luck
