There are several chips you could be talking about, I'm assuming you mean do you have an NVIDIA video card. If not skip this and look below, if you do mean video card simply click the start button, right click My Computer or Computer (depending on your Windows version) and click properties. Then either click the hardware tab and click device manager for Windows XP or just click device manager in the upper left for Windows 7. Either way once device manager is open click the plus sign next to display adapters and that should list your video card.
If you mean the motherboard chipset, simply repeat the process above to get to device manager but instead of clicking on display adapter click computer.

Laptop powers up but the screen is blank. cannot reboot

Chances are you have the infamous Nvidia chipset of death issue. Basically there is a design flaw in the computer that causes failure after a prolonged period of use (usually after warranty) and HP is not fixing or standing behind their product.

There was a lawsuit against HP and Nvidia - and a settlement was reached. But only certain HP DV9xxx models are included in the settlement. Do a google search for Nvidia HP lawsuit.

Basically there is too much heat in the unit for the chips and connections that where used. The Nvidia chip generates most of the heat. The end result is that after a period of time - your motherboard will fry itself. Starting with the graphics (first the laptop display) then followed by the wireless card, followed by the entire motherboard.

There are "fixes" that you can try - but most are not really fixing the problem - just getting around it for a short period - more of a band aid.

Hp pavillion dv9000 laptop restart/ hang after 1 hour & shows garbage display in between it. pls tell me whether it's the problem of nvedia or display cable

This is more likely a problem with the nVidia video chip. The problem with this laptop model is that the video chip extremely overheats. When you shut down the computer, the video chip cools down. When this cycle repeats several times, the solder holding the chip to the motherboard starts to dry & eventually crack. When this happens, symptoms like the one you described starts to appear.

Constant rebooting on\off every 2 seconds

This happens when the Nvidia chip on the motherboard overheats and the solder points around this chip fail. The motherboard needs to be "reflowed" or replaced. The chip in question is the Nvidia chip adjacent to the processor.

HP Pavilion Tx1000 not seeing wireless card. I put a new one in since the old one didn't seem to work, and not seeing the new card either.

That's the problem of the controller chip not the wireless itself. Faulty Nvidia chip on the motherboard. You will need to reflow the chip. Take it to the shop or get the DIY guide from

Is there a replacement video card for the NVidia 8600 on HPDV9700

When you look at the specifications for your system and you see an "M" after the video card number, RE: Nvidia 8600M .... The "M" means that the video is a chip and is soldered onto the motherboard and cannot therefore be changed without serious knowledge of micro soldering these connections. It takes specialized equipment. In most cases you are stuck with that chip on that particular motherboard.
