This is not an easy job you have to completely remove the bacl of the computer you will see a copper strip by the fan remove both chec the fan to see if it is clogged up with dust.
The copper strip removed will reveal a green plate with a chip on it clean it off a re-apply thermal greese from any good electrical shop.put it back together that should sort out the over heating problem.
Failing that you may want to find an engineer which is what i recomend.

If it didn't overheated in the past, then your laptop might overheat because the ventilation system doesn't work properly anymore.
Check if the ventilation is blocked in any way. Just to be sure, blow some air through the cooling fan vent (on the left side of your laptop). If dust comes out, then continue doing so until there is no dust. Also, if your laptop had this condition for a long time, then you should replace the thermal paste or thermal pad on your processor because it might have dried out and it isn't efficient anymore.
Another reason would be a faulty component. For example, if your laptop overheats near the battery and the battery itself overheats, then the battery is the culprit and should be replaced or removed until a replacement is avaible (for example, this issue was common in Dell laptops rendering the battery useless after a short period of time).
Also, high work loads make laptop computers overheat. If you play a resource demanding game for a long time your laptop will overheat for sure.
For better feedback, describe when does your laptop overheats and where (as a whole or a certain area).

I have a Gateway laptop model no. M622-UCX which continues to prompt for the system date configuration in cmos setup during start. It also cannot remember the date and time I entered several times and...

When a laptop/computer prompts for a BIOS date and Time setting every time you boot up, this indicates the BIOS battey is flat or nearly flat. This BIOS battery needs to be replaced and the BIOS Date and Time setting needs to be configured etc.

Gateway 1631 won't turn on

Your model of laptop should have 1x1024MB + 1x2048MB memory modules. Check the memory :
- if you have 2 memory modules use only one at a time (also, change the slot every time). The other memory could be defective, or
- check your memory with another laptop, or
- use some known good memory etc.

If the memory is good your motherboard is defective. Expensive to fix or to replace it. Have it checked by a professional. Any warranty still applies for our laptop ?

Out of nowhere my hardrive has magically crashed. Haven't downloaded anything and it popped up with an error saying to make a backup and contact gateway for assistance. But of course there is no warranty...

Check if the harddrive is in raid configuration is it Raid 1 or Raid 0. If you are using Raid 1 check which hdd is crashed as might be displayed in error message you can connect new hdd to the port and rebuilt your raid. If single hdd then need to backup data and use new hdd and reinstalled windows.

Gateway laptop - whirring, buzzing sound

if it's a continuous whirring sound it is most likely the cooling fan. this is normal. as the computer gets older this will get noticably louder as the fan has to run faster to prevent overheating.

Laptop starts and after a few seconds shuts down

Could be overheating, or possibly a motherboard gone bad. Try taking the battery out, unplug from power cord, hold down the power button for 20 seconds, put battery back in and see what happens.
