The top thread tension may be to tight
the needle & thread may not be compatable--here's how to tell
Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread

Hi I have a Bernina B 380 and the thread keeps cutting when sewing. It's unthreading..so frustrating. Any tips?

Is the thread fraying? If so, there is an issue perhaps with the needle. There could be a burr, it could be the incorrect size for the thread you are using, the fabric may be incompatible with the needle & thread, or the needle itself could be defective. If the thread is actually breaking, then it could be misthreaded or the tension is too tight.

Try changing needles and then changing thread. AVOID old or bargain bin threads.

I am doing some machine embroidery on my Bernina Artista 730 and the upper thread keeps breaking. I have changed the needle and rethreaded many, many times!

use a bigger eye in the needle and loosen of the needle thread tension a bit
needles are all the same length but come with various size eyes to accommodate thicker or thinner threads
use scrap material until you get a good combination

Bernina 335 serger won't sew/overlock. carefully rethreaded the serger but that hasn't helped.

The 335 has a two thread chain stitch (stitch type 401), and the overlock side (right needle side), is a three thread plain overlock. If you are describing the plain overlock as the problem, I would first suggest the following in re-threading:

1. Thread the upper looper
2. Thread the lower looper
3. Thread the needle last (important)

If the needle threaded, you cannot re-thread the lower looper without breaking the thread.
In order to thread the lower looper, the lower looper must pass by the needle thus picking up the needle thread. So, instead of threading the lower looper thread underneath the needle thread, the looper would be threaded on top and cannot sew without breaking the thread.
Make sure that the threads are bedded between the tension disks. Check this by stretching the thread fore and aft of the tension disks as well as visually noting that the threads are not accidentally threaded behind the disks. You can also loosen the tension disks when threading so as to allow the threads to bed deeply between the disks.
Please reply with your observations.

Why does the thread break on top?

The top thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle
8. Try a different spool or cone of thread

The top thread is balling up on the bottom side of the material - what needs adjusted?

try changing the needle--the tip of the needle could be damaged
turn the bobbin the opposite direction
make sure the top has not come off the thread take up lever
here is a free manual, see if it's the right one for the machine

I've had this machine for over 10 yrs. The problem is that I cannot seem to get the tension adjusted correctly. I was sewing through a batch of triangles and all of the sudden the thread under the...

try these suggestions, see if they will help

try changing thread--top & bobbin,, some thread does not stay good as some other does
usually needle have a flat side goes to the back of the machine, make sure the needle is pushed up into the needle holder--is it the right needle for the fabric
and even if it's a new needle, I'd try another new one,,it's possible it could be bent or blunt or warped
check the thread take up lever to see if the top thread is still on it, when the thread comes off the take up lever it can jam up a sewing machine
check the needle plate to see if there are any burrs on it

also clean under the needle plate & bobbin area for loose threads or lint

The needle thread on my bernina minimatic keeps breaking.

There is special thread for denim/jeans. It usually comes in shades of brown. It's a little heavier and might help with the breakage. You might also want to try a little less tension. I assume you already have a Schmetz denim needle?

Bernina 2500DCET serger keeps breaking the centre needle thread for no apparent reason .Already had machine serviced, new needle plate didn't solve anything either. Any ideas

I have found with any serger I have used that you have to cut the looper (bottom) threads before re threading the needle threads. You then rethread the loopers.
If you don't do this, the needle threads keep breaking. Hope this helps.
