Question about Microsoft Outlook Express

1 Answer

At work we used Mercury Mail on our main computer which links all our individual computers together. On our individual computers we use Pegasus mail. We would like to keep the same email address but use outlook from now on. However, we need to transfer the existing emails over as well for work purposes. I have googled it, it can be done.... but i dont understand the technical talk that was used to explain it. Please help!

You probably need to set the SMTP and POP addresses for sending and recieving the mail, this can be explained if you have an IT department or a network technician, and as far as the existing emails go, you can always just put copies of them on the server and then put them on the machines when you need them.

What I do transfer of email files?

When Outlook saves items to your computer, it uses a type of data file called an Outlook Personal Folders file (.pst) (Personal Folders file (.pst): Data file that stores your messages and other items on your computer. You can assign a .pst file to be the default delivery location for e-mail messages. You can use a .pst to organize and back up items for safekeeping.). If you are using a Microsoft Exchange Server account, your items are usually delivered to and saved on the mail server. To allow you to work with your messages even when you cannot connect to the mail server, Outlook offers Offline Folders, which are saved in another type of data file called an Offline Folder file (.ost) (Offline Folder file: The file on your hard disk that contains offline folders. The offline folder file has an .ost extension. You can create it automatically when you set up Outlook or when you first make a folder available offline.) on your computer.

The primary distinctions between the two types of Outlook data files are:

The Outlook .ost files are used only when you have an Exchange Server account and choose to work offline or use Cached Exchange Mode.
The Outlook .pst files are used for POP3 (POP3: A common protocol that is used to retrieve e-mail messages from an Internet e-mail server.), IMAP (IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol): Unlike Internet e-mail protocols such as POP3, IMAP creates folders on a server to store/organize messages for retrieval by other computers. You can read message headers only and select which messages to download.), and HTTP accounts. When you want to create archives or back up your Outlook folders and items on your computer, including Exchange Server accounts, you must create and use additional .pst files.

How can I get my emails?

Since this is in the motherboards section, I assume the motherboard has failed.
Remove the hard drive from the computer.
Borrow or purchase (If you do not have one) an external hard drive adapter that connects to a USB port.
Plug the drive into the adapter, and plug the USB cable of the adapter into a different computer.
The second computer must be running the same E-mail program (Thunderbird, Pegasus, etc.) as the first computer was running. Open Windows Explorer and double click on the E-mail you wish to read.
The email program will display it.

If you purchase a new computer, and wish to transfer all of your old E-mails to the new computer, copy the entire E-mail directory to a USB stick and load it onto the new hard drive, or mount the old hard drive in the new computer alongside the new hard drive.
The old hard drive should show up as drive D: in Windows Explorer.

Trying to get my netbook to pick up email sent to my main computer. they are linked via a router

Hi, I don't think it can be done unless you setup an internal mail server. But you could setup an email acount on the laptop.
You need to input the main settings that you used originally. But once the email has been downloaded it will only be on that computer.
Now if you have an online email service then you can access your mail from any computer.
Who is your isp?
I will try and help more.

You can not fix it . Thousands of users are reporting this problem. Yahoo is working on the site. It is not your computer. A few can enter their Mail by clicking on the link in the top left of any Yahoo Answers page instead of the Yahoo main page.

Hi,

You should have the drivers from the recovery discs that came with your PC. You can try thunderbird as an alternative email client.

No access to port 25 for wireless clients

What happens if you connect one of the wireless machines with an ethernet cable? Any chance you have a Firewall of AV program blocking port 25 on these machines? Have you tried Safe Mode With Networking? I'm sure you realize that is most often caused by the ISP blocking Port 25, but I assume they would have told you so if this was the case.
