Question about Sony Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My Sony Vaio VGN-NS110D Laptop computer won’t boot up, it cycles through to a black screen with the mouse pointer there which I can move. Apparently this is called the ‘black screen of death’! I can’t do anything from here except manually shut down. I Can’t press Ctrl-Alt-Del and try and put in explorer.exe into a new task (one of the apparent solutions). I’ve pressed F8 and gone through all the options on there and nothing seems to work. I can’t restore the laptop to an earlier point as it says that none have been created. I made some recovery CD’s when I first got the laptop, but they don’t work. I don’t have a windows CD as it was bought with Windows already installed on it. Please help!

    Need some clarity:

    1) Does safe mode with command prompt take you to command prompt

    2) When did the system last boot up

    3) What HW or SW change do you remember making to the system (or windows update etc)

    Hi dhankhar,
    1. Even safe mode with command prompt brings it to the black screen and mouse pointer and nothing else.
    2. The problem arose yesterday morning, it was working the night before.
    3. I haven’t changed any of the HW and I’m not sure what the last update was, probably a standard auto update that window brings up every so often, the last being about a month ago. I did download a tv show, but didn’t actually have a chance to open it. I’ve done this before without any problems though.

Unfortunately that doesn't work, nothing happens when I press Ctrl-Alt-Del. Do you have any other suggestions?

Try these 1) Shut down the system 2) Remove the battery 3) Hold down the power button for say 2 minutes 4)Put the battery back 5) Boot the system
If you still hit the black screen with a cursor: 1) Wait for 2 mins at the black screen 2) Just type in your windows password (if you don't have one hit enter) and press enter 3) Wait for another 2-3 mins 4) Hit Alt Ctrl Delete and go to task manager (this time it should take you to the task manager) - fingers crossed LOL 5) Now do new task - explorer.exe
Hopefully you should be back in action.
Note, this is a work around and for a permanent fix either try and clean your system (check for viruses) or reinstall the system. Hope this helps.

Sony vaio vgn-nr285E battery won't hold a charge

If thelaptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to anunacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

My Sony Vaio VGN NW225F laptop won't start up.

First thinkg I'd do is to connect an external monitor to the laptop to see if you can get an image, any image, during booting. If you can't see anything, either using the laptop's screen or external monitor, then you have a hardware failure in the laptop that's probably beyond the abilities of a novice to repair. Get somebody who knows about how to clear the CMOS of the laptop.

Hi, machine boot up but I can't go to desktop. I can see a mouse pointer and it moves. But the screen is just black. My anti virus is active.

My guess is it's more than likely a windows 7 machine?

Turn on the computer and hold down the F8 key to access a DOS menu.

Enter the laptop through Safe mode.

Once Windows safe mode starts, go to accessories in the start menu, then system tool, then system restore and attempt to restore your system to a date listed before when this began.

Windows 7 seems to be a good operating system for restores.

Chances are it IS a virus/Spyware and unless you know which to use these days, the big names will always fool you.

When i power up my vaio and enter my password, theres a black screen with no icons but i can see the mouse and i could move the mouse... please help?

Hi, try booting in safe mode by pressing the ESC key during boot up, you will have the option of resetting your operating system to a time before the problem started. Or you can insert your CD which came with the PC and restore windows from there. Both of these options should not effect any saved work on your PC. Hope this helps, come back to me if you need more help.

sounds like the backlite for your monitor needs to be replaced. (like the lightbulb went bad) These can be replaced usually, for under 100 dollars.

The mouse is frozen in my Sony Vaio VGN-NR180E . It won't move .It also looks like the screen is locked. It feels like my mouse is locked. Thanks so much for your help!

Restart the computer-

Plug up a USB mouse to see if that doesn't work

Your touch pad software may not be installed. Goto Sony's device driver support page and download the mouse drivers for your model. Sony has good software support. You'll find the touchpad program easy. Reload and see where that puts you.
