The Garmin Nuvi 200w comes with a 1GB solid state drive. The problem lies with the fact that the North American map preloaded with the 200 series is already around 910MB plus the help files and additional languages most of us don't use like Russian, Korean, Japanese etc etc that push it past 980MB or so. Now do the math and you'll find that the 37MB update doesn't fit in there, so you can choose not to update.

You can plug the Nuvi to your PC and explore the Garmin folder and get rid of the Help folder, which will not hinder the operation of the unit but will disable the HELP button when you power up the unit, and you can also remove all the languages you don't use from the Speech and Text folders.

Also when you add a 1GB SD card to the Nuvi, it doesn't add the extra storage to the actual unit. It just allows you to add more maps or pictures to it, but you cannot update the main file in the Solid State Drive by just adding more memory. The main files' name is GMAPPROM.IMG by the way and it's the biggest one at around 900 some MB's. You can just follow my instructions above and you'll be fine, if by any chance you bought another map you could load it up on the 1GB SD card. Except for ALL of Europe because that's 1.4GB if you load up all of it, so I would choose only the countries I know I'd visit.

Need to know how i update the maps card for it

The latest version of Garmin Express provides the ability to install a map update directly to an SD card.
The SD card installation option will only appear when updating a compatible device that does not have sufficient internal memory for the largest allowable map region. When using the SD card installation option, critical files are loaded to the SD card so it must remain in the device after the update to ensure full functionality. For the largest size SD card a device can use, refer to: What is the largest size Secure Digital (SD) card that an automotive device can accept?
The SD card support during the map update will only function with up-to-date software. It may be necessary to update the device's software with Garmin Express prior to updating the maps. These devices do not support the SD card option:
  • Nissan 700
  • nuvi 295
  • nuvi 300 series
  • nuvi 500 series
  • nuvi 600 series
  • nuvi 800 series
  • nuvi 805 series
  • nuvi 5000
  • StreetPilot series
  • zumo 450
  • zumo 550
  • zumo 665
For devices that do not support using the SD card with the map update application, any maps that do not fit in the internal memory can be installed to the SD card manually, using these instructions:

How do I download updates to my gps

http://www.insigniaproducts.com/products/car-audio-video-gps/NS-NAV01.html
Form the manuafacurers web site - The manufacturer is working on a map update however it is stored on the SD memory card in your GPS unit so you may need to contact insignia to find out how the SD memory card is updated and when the update will be released.
I would at a guess think that a memory card reader device may need to used on your P.C and that a download into the sd memory card would be how insignia would achieve an update. But backup what is on the memory card first onto your hard drive in your P.C. before altering its contents if this is how it is achieved.

The lifetime updater for my garmin nuvi 1390 popped up a message yesterday indicating a new map was available. The update froze up in the middle, now the nuvi won't power on.

This is a common case in this devices; when Garmin freezes on 'loading maps,' or is acting erratically is symptomatic of having corrupt firmware. In order to correct this, first I suggest make a back-up your favorites, clearing all user data, and if it still is stuck, then updating your Nuvi firmware.

Follow these three steps to take to get your Garmin Nuvi 1300 running like new:
Back up your Favorites.
Perform a Hard Reset.
Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

I bought a lifetime update from Garmin a few years ago but now my nuvi 270 tells me that I don't have enough memory to install the latest maps and that I must choose only certain regions. I have an 8Gb...

The internal memory of the nuvi is full. Some maps will need to be delete before any new maps can be added. Typically, the map in the nuvi is named GMAPPROM.IMG and a map installed to an SD (or SDHC) memory card is named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

1) Remove the SD card from the memory slot

2) Connect the nuvi to the computer via USB cable.

3) Open the nuvi drive.

4) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

5) Empty the Recycle Bin.

6) Retry the map update of the nuvi.

This method will take some time to perform depending on how many map segments you are sending to the nuvi. Transferring the entire map can take over an hour. A quicker way is to send the maps to the SDHC card directly by inserting the card into a card reader. This eleminates the slow Garmin card reader from the equation and transfers are done in a fraction of the time. No maps will be on the nuvi - they will all be on the memory card instead. To update the SD or SDHC card, do this:

1) Repeat steps 1 thru 5 above. This removes the maps files from the nuvi.

2) Disconnect the nuvi from the computer.

3) Connect a card reader to the computer.

4) Insert the SD or SDHC card into the reader.

5) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

6) Update the map to the SD or SDHC card.

When either method is employed, only one map file set will result. GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of this file set. You should ensure / change the name to GMAPPROM.IMG. Any subsequent file set added should be named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks.

Plenio GPS 3000

Plenio Is Litttle Picky On What SD-Chip To Use, I Just Upgraded Mine To 2GB SD-Memory
Chip Purchased From Walmart, Mgr Name Is a PNY, Black and Gold Display Case, also
Say's OPTIMA SD Ultra High Speed, Mgr Bar Code# P-SD2GB-FS [On Back Of Display Case]

During My Upgrading to 2GB Chip, Using Plenio-OEM CD," Navigation Map Data Base" DVD-ROM
Version 4.0. Had same problem,
Using Plenio Folder on PC " C:/Plenio/V-Up Pro 3000/VUPro3000.exe, checked box, SYSTEM UPGRADE, Selected SD Memory Drive, [My PC Was F:/], then software should detect SD-Chip
and Display Free memory Size, If So, Then Select Next, Should Take Aprox 20 minutes to Complete
Installing Plenio Software From Your PC to SD Memory Chip.
I'am Sure That IS How It Went For You, Mine Did Not Work For Navigation Either, Everything Else Was OK.
Take Your 1GB Chip And Copy To Your Hard Drive, ie; C:/Plenio/OEM_Plenio_1GB_SD
[Good To Always Have A OEM Backup]

From Windows Explorer Locate This Folder Name On The 1GB SD Chip Directory: MobileNavigator.
In This Folder, Locate File: Device.cfg & MobileNavigator.exe & rdat [No File Extension Displayed]
1] Copy These File's To Same Folder On Your 2GB SD Chip.
Your System Now Has Knowen Operating System Installed and should work like before,
might want to recheck your personal setting's.

I also noted using Plenio Software, I could not Check-Box "OS Upgrade" I think this is why
It Did Not Work. Still have to ask Plenio-Tech About This.

WHAT IS SD CARD FOR??

Hello TRICOUNTY,

Your Garmin GPS has an SD card slot. You can use this slot to insert a removeable SD memory card into the unit SD memory cards for used for storage by many portable devices. The most common useage for the GPS is to view pictures taken by a digital camera (which also uses an SD card) with the GPS's picture viewer function.

I am not sure what the ads you are referring to are. Where are you seeing the ads? On the GPS screen? After inserting a SD card into the GPS?

Best Regards,
Ken
