Question about EdgeStar TWR282S Wine Cooler

1 Answer

Edgestar twr125 9 bottle wine cooler cooler stopped working. found a bad capacitor on the logic board (1000uf) . replaced it. Question: when are red and green led's on the logic board supposed to be on/off? When is the exterior fan supposed to be running/not running? As the temp control is turned more colder, the exterior fan stops running and both led's turn off. If the temp control is turned more warmer, then the fan starts and the leds turn on. This seems to me the opposite of what should happen? does anyone know if this operations is correct? Thanks

This is not my wine cooler. I'm a teacher in the electronics department at our voc high school. Another teacher brought it me. He reported that it was working fine until it just quit. I found a bad cap and replaced it. I do not know if any other components failed because I do not have a schematic and neither do I know how these things work, but it seems to be working backwards. No one else has been inside it to wire it incorrectly unless it was done at the factory. So I set the thermostat at mid range. I will let it run overnight and see what happens and I will contact you tomorrow to see if you can provide any other info.............Do you know what the red and green leds are telling me?

These work on the Thermoelectric (Peltier principle) There is no compresser. Basically there is a bimetal semiconductor device, that when a voltage is applied one side turns cold and the other side get hot (heat pump). Then the outside fan ejects the heat that collects on the heat sink.
Anyway, your suspicion seems correct that the thermostat is wired backwards (from the factory).
Works correct as long as you know that cold means hot and vice versa. !!! The blown capacitor is what made it orginally stop working though. I'll mark the problem as closed. thanks

Yes, I would agree with you...
Is there a NO and a NC contact on the thermostat??? amybe somehow the wires got placed on the wrong terminal...that would make things work backwards...
There also could be that possibility on the logic board also... check the wiring for the possibility that the wires are crossed up somewhere...

Honestly no....I am an HVAC mech. by trade and what you were abserving seemed correct to me also...I have worked on many heating and cooling systems, so I was just drawing from my experiences....

I will do some reasearch later and see what I can find...

When the exterior fan comes on... can you also verify that the compressor starts???

Look forward to hearing from you...

Thanks... didn't think they used thermo for units that large...but technology is a changing... :-)
Glad you have it figured out...
Also your friend may want to put a surge suppressor ahead of that cooler... power surges are often what blows those caps....

    Have a great weekend!!

Edgestar wine cooler blowing fuse on the left side circuit board

If you have replaced the circuit boards it's probably associated with a wiring short circuit or compressor failure. Suggest you get a professional technician to further investigate the fault. In the interim check for a short to the frame of the unit, an internal light or for moisture issues or a condensation issue from water.

Wine cooler Doesn't work

I had the same issue on a Whynter WC28S SNO 28 Bottle Wine Cooler, it even seems like most of the thermoelectric wine coolers, fridges, and such have the same boards by hanny. For cross refference parts I used NTE because Fry's Electronics had them.
Switching transistors - NTE51
1N 4007 - NTE125
Silicon Dual Power Rectifier - NTE6090

Also I have a venotemp wine cooler that has pretty much the same board, with the same plugs for fans, light, control panal, and cooler fan for $45 shipped at their site under replacement parts. Hope this helps people looking for info on this. Also research Switching Power Supply issues for information.

My VinoTemp stopped working. When I opened the back cover there is a red and green LED light blinking really fast. What does that mean?

This problem is typically found in the control board circuit. Probably the 1000MFD 16V Capacitor on the DC side of the PCB may be at fault. The Fix is to replace the capacitor which can be purchased at any Radio Shack for about $2.00. Procedure is to de-solder the the bad component and solder the replacement. This is a polarized component so pay attention the polarity when installing. Test the fix; Properly reinstall the PCB wiring, and Enjoy your Chilled Wine. Recardo.

Well... it is tough to get wine to spoil.

Keep it out of the sunlight and don't get it really warm
(after all... is just grapes that have already spoiled...
I'm just saying).

I bought the VERY EXPENSIVE Kitchen-Aid
48 bottle... took the 5 years & about another month
for the evaporator FAN to rub a hole in the evaporator aluminum return line (made in USA (opinion: junk)).
KITCHEN-AID never even returned a call or e-mail.

Handling circuit boards: You MUST WEAR anti-static
wrist straps when handling them... ELSE you could be popping those semi-conductors like POPCORN.

The only other REPUTABLE source of information I have ever found on EDGESTAR (very helpful) were the folks at
Compact Appliance.

VT12TEDS display black, clicking sound in back panel, tic, tic, with a blinking light diode, but no fuse seen, nothing moving, maybe at times the fan blades want to move but do not, they spin freely by...

My VT-12TEDi stopped working after about six months; the common ticking sound from the controller board. After a little research, I found the 16V 1000uF 16mmx10mm capacitor (silver and black can) on the board (upper left corner) was bad. Visual indications are the typical "popped" top of the capacitor can. I purchased a quality replacement capacitor for less than $1 and replaced it. It was a very easy soldiering job that most people with a pencil iron could do. The unit works great now and I don't expect it to go out again anytime soon.
