MARANTZ PMD 101 PROBLEMS, COUNTER AND REWIND

Hi. Just bought a Marantz PMD 101 portable mono tape recorder for the sound quality, I am a pro guitarist and need this for recording acoustic and electric ideas....

I just received this item from ebay at UK £50 so i want it to work.

The counter is very very noisy and clanky - it litters the recordings with clicks etc, simply the internal mic picking up the physical clicking of the counter in forward mode.

Also, rewind stays on for a few seconds only.

Both problems exist with or without a cassette in the machine and I am using he marantz adapter for power.

i have no idea how to open this machine even , sooo many screws, but have made valve amps and pedals so I can be handy if i want to be.

Is this worth fixing myself? Any pointers on fixing this please?

All help gratefully received, many thanks in advance.

my marantz 101 has a counter issue as well. it is very slow in getting going. i'm not sure why it takes it's time to run, and have no idea why it always starts to work. for whatever reason it does work but it has a mind of it's own. it does seem, it could be in my head only, that if i tap on it next to the counter it starts running. again this could be in my mind.
anyone know about this. maybe some oil or something like that?????
thank you in advance for any help

Get the belts changed, and check a clutch inside the mech which drives the auto-stop mechanism.

It works in a way that it normally holds the auto-stop off if the spools are rotating, but when it wears, there is no srive through it to hold the auto-stop off, so the auto-stops stops, if you see what I mean.

Any good audio tech should be able to do this, if the machine otherwise works OK, it is worth doing because these are very nice and usually reliable machines.

For musical work though, the CP series are usually better, as they provide 3-heads and off-tape monitoring, with better quality and the facility to set tape bias to suit high-grade tapes.

Jorge,
The schematic will be part of the service manual, which gives a complete explanation of dis-assembly, circuit function, parts, & adjustment. You can purchase a service manual for the Marantz PMD 670 at http://www.servicemanuals.net/ServiceManual/MARANTZ/pmd+670/pos1/results.aspx

Hi I have a marantz pmd661 with a buzz on record when set to ext mic/line with no i/p regards

If you let the input "float" with no connection it very well may buzz. The input needs to be tied down with a driving source.

How can I digitize cassette tapes using the Marantz PMD670?

Take a set of RCA Jack cords (4 jacks) and on the tape recorders "out" jacks attach one pair and on the PMD 670's "In" Jacks attach the other pair. Set the tape a few seconds before where you want to record , set your levels to where you want them, start the recorder then start recording with the PMD.

You may need to test record a few seconds to make sure the recording is at the level you want it to be. Plug in a set of headphones to the PMD and listen in from time to time to make sure it's recording OK.

There you go.

Best,

Dan

Marantz CDR-510: Playback is good , recording is distorted

If this brand of media is new to you and the symptom is unique to it, I'd try a different brand.

Monitoring during record would never reveal media problems as there is no immediate playback after record as on old-school 3-head tape recorders.

I've had similar intermittent problems and I never could find a pattern to it except that it always seemed to be on low-end media. My best advice would be to try to find a pattern in your instance and make a change that avoids it. Then publish what you learned for us.

Good luck.
