Question about Olympus FE-360 Digital Camera

1 Answer

My FE-360 keeps shutting down with the lens stuck out. When you try and turn it on you can hear the lens trying to retract but it stays stuck out and the camera makes a bleeping sound. I have noticed that if i open and close the battery cover whilst it is making this bleeping noise, the screen comes to life. All of the menus can be accessed and options changed but the picture seen on screen is very poor quality and the camera will not take a picture. As soon as you press the capture image button, the whole thing freezes with the screen still on. All I can do then is remove the battery to power down. Any ideas? Is this likely to be a costly repair job, not worth it in the end?

Your camera has a lens error, this is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply become dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse then contact the Olympus service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed the cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose by trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault. Although the article mentions Canon a few times, the advice applies equally to all cameras with lens errors and is not model-specific.

If the link doesn't work then cut and paste the following address into your browser:-

Good luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera. Please take a moment to rate the speedy and free answer I have provided for you and any testimonial which you might wish to add is always welcome!

My Olmpus fe-360 wont turn on the lens won't retract and it beeps when I try to turn it on

The lens is jammed, which means a gear is stripped or damaged, or jammed in the lens assembly, and the electronic "brain" is turning it off, since it's not in the right position (retracted). This can be caused by the camera getting bumped while the lens was out, dust, dirt, or sand can get in the lens through the front of the camera and jam it, or the batteries could be weak. After you make sure your batteries are good, and it still isn't working, go to this web page and try their suggestions. They report about 1/2 of the cameras with a lens problem can be fixed trying their suggestions. If that doesn't work, don't have it serviced- you can buy a better new camera than what you would pay a service shop.

The page says "lens error" messages, but it also applies to your problem.

My Olmpus fe-360 wont turn on. The lens won't

Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your batteries may need to be replaced, or the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

If this response helped, please take a moment to post a rating for me. A "Very Helpful" would be greatly appreciated.

Camera was dropped, now lens wont retract, no image on screen, when turned on a series of buzzes and beeps then the camera turns itsself off.

Bad news I'm afraid. The drop likely damaged the lens tube (housing) or jarred the zoom mechanism off of its track. Either of these conditions causes the camera to shut off to prevent further damage, and either condition will require professional repair.

Samsun sl201 lens will not extend, then camera shuts down

If the camera's lens will not retract out, then eventually shuts down, here is what you try to do.

Hold the camera from your right hand with the lens facing down. Then tap the base of the camera to your left palm while turning the camara on; do this several times until the camera's lens retracts out.

This problem often occur when the camera was taken outdoor or in the beach. Sand or a tiny granule of dirt might got stuck in the base of the lens.

Polaroid i735 Camera won't turn on. Lens stuck.

I had the same problem, and fixed it by wiggling the lens a little, when turning it on.
After a few tries, it finally wiggled free, and the lens retracted.

I have same problem. I turn on the camera you hear it trying to come on, shows display pic for like 3 seconds and then shuts down. If I could get the lens to retract I am sure the camera would work.

Dirt jammed in lens barrel area

Hello Dear,
Both of you are required to take your camera to a Canon Care Centre or an expert and get the camera cleaned thoroughly, once all the dirt is removed the camera will work fine but this is not possible at your place.

The lens is stuck

my daughter sat on ours while it was on and the lens wouldn't retract. I tried the banging repair suggested for a stuck lens. After quite a few tries, it got the lens to retract when turned off but it wouldn't stay out when on, so i grabbed the lens and gently pulled it all the way out while it was on and it worked!
