Hi

First make sure to test the lid switch assembly, you can jump it to test it. If the lid switch and motor is also fine then the control board should be replaced. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

I have a maytag washer, toploader which was working fine until recently. Now when it starts rotating, there is a burning smell all in the area. What causes it?

Hi

Your washer uses a belt to transfer the power to the tub from the motor. If the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning “rubber” smell. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer. The solution is to replace the belt with a new one. To replace the belt you can open the back lid of the washer.
Remove the old belt & remove the bolt holding motor. Now remove the motor, remove & replace the plastic isolators with the new ones supplied with the belt on the motor spindles. After re-installing the motor & bolt adjust the new belt.

Please post back for any further assistance.

How do I replace the lid switch on my Kenmore Series 80 washing machine I have the part

Hi

To replace the lid switch in a Whirlpool-built direct drive washer you’ll need to open it up. This washer use plastic end caps to cover the console screws. Just remove the console end caps and the console retaining screws are right there. Once you've removed the console screws, flip the entire control console up and back to reveal the cabinet retaining braces. After the cabinet is pulled back from washer you’ll be able to see the lid switch. You can inspect whether the lid switch is disconnected or burnt, use a multimeter to check the continuity of the lid switch.

My neptune washer smells like rubber burning when i wash clothes

Hi
Older top load washers use a belt to drive to transfer the energy from motor to drum. However, if the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning “rubber” smell. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer.

The solution is to replace the belt with a new one. To replace the belt you can open the back lid of the washer. Remove the old belt & remove the bolt holding motor. Now remove the motor, remove & replace the 2 plastic isolators with the new ones supplied with the belt on the motor spindles. After re-installing the motor & bolt adjust the new belt.

My washer was purchased new in 1989. Are parts still available?

The problem is your lid switch. That "hole" you mention that you are putting a wedge in is where the lid switch is. It is activated by a small acuator on the washer lid that pushes down on the lid switch when the lid is closed.

If the washer fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug.

If the switch is not activated by a lid strike, it will activated by a hinge actuator located next to either the left or right lid hinge. You will need to remove the operator console in order to access this type of switch.

If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

A new lid switch (if needed) can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please let me know. Please post back with a complete model number (located on a nameplate around the wash tub opening) with your questions, so that I may be able to provide you with better assistance. I hope this is helpful.

Washer won't spin

Hi, If the washer agitates but does not spin, it could be a lid switch. When the timer is in the spin cycle, can you hear the motor running?
If you look around the lid opening, you should see the model# label.
Most common problem is the lid switch and that is worth fixing. Please let me know if this helps and if I can assist you further.

Lid switch replacement

That can be tricky on most washers. Usually you would have go in from the back of the washer. Reach around the tub and remove the two screws holding on the switch. It would be easier to do if the tub wasn't in place. But tub removal is even more time consuming and a pain.
